My car has developed stress cracks in the tunnel where it meets the firewall. Is there a standard repair for these kind of cracks? Anybody know a good welder?

Hey Brent, you should be glad you don't have a 17 year old corolla!!,Maybe I should have a closer look at my old heap,I've been planning on some chassis braces/subframe connectors to keep it from splitting in two when add r-tires next season. No time to design/build now as the ice race season is here!.

Tom, I am glad I don't have a 17 year old anything since my neon is my daily driver, takes my family to mom's for christmas etc.

It seems if you drive the neons hard (without a roll cage) they develop these two 1-2 inch cracks on the tunnel. I have heard lots of people say they have them but I don't think anyone has bothered fixing them. I have never heard of any problems associated with them. I just figure if somethings flexing I would like to brace it to stiffen the car and aid in handling.

Chris, do I know Andrew W.? Sorry, I'm really bad with names.

My snappy reply to "buy a Honda"; Why are these cracks caused by torque? I thought it was funny:)

Black 93 RX7?SOLO 1 ASS2 Likes rubbing walls and sliding where he has no business sliding.......

Also ran a black EK civic at a few events.

Just tell him i sent you, he knows who you are.

Just for the record Chris,I've lost track of the No. of honda's owned/raced,its somewhere around 20 I think?including one very heavily modded '87 crx si,also 1300cc civic with sidedraft prelude carbs on a aluminum manifold built by me in my stud tire ice racer.
I just chose to buck the fwd trend in the B family, after playing around with the challenges of getting a RWD car to turn-in and still have a decent amount of corner exit grip I don't expect to start playing in a front driver any time soon.I get to steer with my hands AND feet all while having all 4 wheels stay planted on the ground.
Just for fun i think I'll upgrade the front bar to a whiteline adjustable unit, crank it to full stiff and see how far I can get the inside front wheel off the ground on corner exits!!
Oh yeah,I just traded my civic in on a 2003 tacoma double cab to tow my corolla and celica alltrac ice racer.

Hmmm.....so what are you trying to say? You don't like honda no more? That's not nice! Neon driver's need somebody to beat! :)

Its just honda has nothing to offer right now(the new accord coupe is kinda nice though)besides my toyota is basically the same as a honda-1600cc 4 cyl, twin cams, about the same weight, wheelbase etc,it just drives the rear wheels instead!
Besides have you seen the new element?and I thought the new crv was ugly.
I was also playing with the idea of taking the corolla to bsp so I can chase Brents hot rod neon.

I was just thinking mister laynlow(our you feet warmed up from the weekend yet?)when our you guys getting that dyno?if I enter bsp than one of your SMT's would be helpful but since the cars not street legal dyno tuning is the only real option.I'm still counting up the prep points but since I have 14 to play with I think the SMT would be a point well spent.
Btw do you know of a shop that can build me a 1 piece driveshaft to replace my 2 piece and hanger bearing?
If anyone is looking for affordable ecu tuning I suggest contacting canspeed.com(shameless plug)

A dyno has been talked about alot lately. A big investment no doubt but it may prove necessary! (tis ok with me!)

Ya my feet are still cold!! That was very cool though!

Gotta get that oil leak fixed on the C. R. rust!

Tom, I was checking out their site the other day. The stand alone ecu and the fuel/timing modifier seem like nice units and the price is cheap. I am going to have to read up on it some more but they look good .

http://www.canspeed.com/perfect.htm

Laynlow13, don't get me into any neon vs honda stuff. I've had my ass kicked by enough hondas to know better.

Bsp will be fun Tom. You know you want to do it. My warm stick neon will be there, pretty much the same as it was last season. (although I have added cracks).

Hey Brent if I can find the money to do what I want(not likely)to the corolla those cracks might get bigger trying to keep up!!
Just kidding Brent,I know your spring changes made big improvements so I'll have to be sharp to be competitive.(oh yeah no more street tires next year!)

Brent
01-31-2003, 06:59 PM
Tom, the changes made improvements to the car but I am still driving it. The car ran some good times at the end of the season but I wasn't driving it. So don't worry unless you are concerned about who wins the fun runs.

Hi Brent, you should cut yourself some slack, your always so negative about your driving ability.I'm hoping at least some of the courses next year will be nice and tight with more than one short slalom section(my car loves transitions).
On some of the longer/faster courses I had a little trouble with the lack of power/wide gear spacings/peaky little stock motor.
I think I will go to bsp for sure as I'd like to continue the devoplement of the corolla and push my learning curve as well.
Hope to see you at the first event,I'll bring a spare crack pipe for you and your neon!:)

Hey Chris, after reviewing this seasons results and comparing your times to mine with you on r-tires and me on streets,we might have some good battles up coming.

I love competition and look forward to trying to keep pace with you and brent.Nothing against brents choice of wheels but I will never own another dodge product OR will one EVER own me.
My other concern is also just trying to stay ahead of whatever Wes runs this year.

Meh, so you are trying to tell me that i'll have to run tires besides corded 2 year old Hoosiers and 1 season old Hankook's??

Well, actually only 1 of them is corded, corded quite bad. I'm gonna run those things till they are both white. Spent a forture on those things i want my money's worth damnit

PS, hope you'll can find those 3-4 secounds somewhere beside tires.

Why all the arrogance,I said I was looking forward to competing against you and I get all this cocky ****.
I was looking forward to some friendly, good natured fun on race days like I had with pretty much everyone else, but I guess you aren't big enough to welcome a little more competion?.
On an earlier post you complained that there wasn't anybody in BSP and you continue to run down someone you don't know when they say their to move into the class, not very classy.
So go ahead and run those corded hoosier's,I'll be doing what I can on a limited budget(read no hoosiers)and some minor mods ( what I can for free)and if I can't outrun you I'll be big enough to be ok with that.
If you don't have anything decent to post don't bother I won't get into a mud slinging contest,I'd prefer to let my driving speak for itself.

Sorry tom, that’s not how I intended to come across. With a lot of my Sim Racing we shit talk back of forth. Nobody really means anything by it, its all in good fun, keeps things interesting and humor at a high. Guess this is the wrong group of people to play around with like that and so much is lost with poor writin communication skills.

All spooky talk aside I look forward to running with you this season and hope that competitive battles will propagate. I suspect Brent and yourself will have a very good battle for the BSP class championship and perhaps and I can stir things up at a few events that I enjoy running. With money constraint’s chances are I will only run a few events at smooth lots where the CRX is a pleasure to drive.

Once again I would like to express my extreme apologies. Now wheres that cave?

Thanks Chris,I agree that that without seeing the other persons face to get a read on if its meant to be funny or not the written word tends to be misunderstood.
I'm pretty new to your solo circle of friends but those that do know me hopefully think that I'm a fun guy,I think sometimes I get thought of as cocky but I like you I don't usually mean what I say.
No harm no foul, thanks for clarifing(it means something to me anyway)I had my visa card out and ready to place orders to ensure that I'd make you eat some crow, thankfully I can put my card away!!;)
With Andrew posting to brent to glue his car back together it raises a Question, does this mean Brent is a crack smokin glue sniffin neon guy?(couldn't resist Brent)

"No harm no foul, thanks for clarifing(it means something to me anyway)I had my visa card out and ready to place orders to ensure that I'd make you eat some crow, thankfully I can put my card away!!"

hmmmmm, that sounds interesting... :)

Anyway,
I'm think if somebody were to build a car to the spec of the rules in BSP they shouldn't have much of a problem beating me. My car is preped to SOLO 1 rules and has not been optimized in SOLO 2.

Now, converting my car back to Carbed, running a PE3 head with some 40 DCOE(or is it DOCE, no, DECO, no.........) Webbers(about 130-145hp), along with 27mm torsion bars, 650lbs rear springs and a fat ass sway bar. Not to mention 225/45/13 hoosiers all around would be a monster. Also, i could run the car in CSP in the SCCA and be compeditive. I'm forgetting something............oh yeah, battary in the back and taking alot of wieght out of the interior and exterior would do wonders. I think that could be worth atleast 3 secounds over my current setup.
Price you ask??? ummmm, around $5500 cdn on top of all the stuff i already have. :(

I'll add on an extra $1000 cdn for that race seat i haven't been able to afford for the past 3 years.

krispy, you are getting dangerously close to describing my car. Dual 45 DCOE Webers, PE3 head, 26mm t-bars, 400lb rear springs, soon to come a fat ass rear sway bar... of course I'll still be 30 seconds slower than you, but I'll have fun doing it!

Hey, who you calling a neon guy?

Used to be a crack sniffin, glue smoking guy but I've turned my life around now.

I'd like to think I've left a few cracks smokin.

I quit glue sniffin when I got the tube stuck to my nose. I had to glue a model airplane to my face before I went to the hospital so it wouldn't look suspicious.

Those specs sound pretty tasty indeed Chris,I know the crx I did(for a fun street car,no solo intentions)was a rocket around the go-kart track in bracebridge,3 season worth of events and I hold the track record with street tires and r-tires.I've never really added prep points but engine work alone would have me in BSP.(factory engine,no swaps)
I'd love to swap to carbs, add compression and some decent cams, but being thrifty means that I'd end up building my own manifold and using some flatslides off of a big bore sportbike.Should be very responsive with the above mods, hey everybody can dream right.
I wish I'd went with some 13x8 wheels, but at the time I didn't want to run higher than ss so I went with the 15x7 kosei's due to cost and availabilty.
So like you I'll continue to tune what I have with some mild updates.

Hey Brent I can picture you with that airplane stuck to you face,:)

Well brent if your engine leaks any oil I know for sure you'll have a few cracks smokin'(they'll be stinky too!)right into the interior that is.

Tom, don't worry. I figured out how to solve the crack problem, I am going to weld hinges over them.

I think thats how toyota originally built my corolla chassis-with some hinges in the middle I mean.;)
But I'm designing a fix for that,we'll see if it helps.
