Browsing around, I found a few references to the Toronto Chinese Motorsports Club. Does it still exist?

TCMC used to host lots of Pro style solo's using the Ikea lot at Leslie and Sheppard. I don't think they exist anymore. I still have trophies from the TCMC and the latest one was dated 1st place 1991  OMG that's many many moooooons ago. (Gosh I feel old, thanks Ryan ;) )

They were a great bunch of guys to compete with.

I believe they DO still exist. I think that they followed the Saturday Solosprint at Shannonville in 2006. Quite a few of us sat in the grandstands watching... it was quite a show.

I think they were also lapping the big track when I was at the DDT one day in the summer for an OMSC lapping day. IIRC a S2000 left on a flatbed after a mishap in Turn 1.

But, I haven't actually spoken with any of them... perhaps someone from the Solosprint event did?

Their president's name was Joe Monzon (at one time). Hummm interesting.

I don't remember the Red Lude, but I do remember my 1990 Prelude SI (Black) and my 1998 Prelude S (Red), a beige VW Rabbit driven by a certain "teacher" who now drives an Isuzu Impulse, not to mention a Mustang with a vanity plate of Gforce, etc.

Yeah, it was fun. Mike B and I were in the same class, and it was always a pleasure competing against him.

What were you driving back then, Finboy?

That group that followed us at Shannonville was Battle Endless, not sure if they're in any way affiliated with TCMC.

We swapped 1sts and 2nds back then, yes. I ran an 89 Prelude SI, Tokico gas struts, Yokohama A008R, 205-50-15. He ran 85 Honda Prelude with funky offset rims that stuck out of the car. Rad moved away from Toronto when he met a nice young lady and got hooked up with her and moved to the states. He's a great guy!

Not implying, you can check the results if they are around somewhere.

Solosport was a real glory age. I've met people from all over the continent that have attended events in Ontario during the SoloSprint era. I even have some video here of when Rogers covered the WOSCA regional back then at "Wonderland Mall".

That article was actually the first time I ever heard about solo-2. It wasn't until 1997 that I finally found out about a club in Ontario and went to a meeting.

If only we could get rid of sunday shopping again...sigh...

Okay, a little TCMC history. I was the token white guy in the club. The club was started by a guy named Chung Tam and then after a couple of years Joe Chan took over the helm. We used to run Solo II's at Ikea (I was usually the course designer) and yes we did pro solo's much to the dismay of the Solo II director of CASC at that time. We also did lapping days at Shannonville and Mosport. The club no longer exists as it did back then. When certain members of the Chinese community rent tracks the track owners (Mosport and Shannonville) still list them as TCMC, but it has nothing to do with the original TCMC.

I remember Chung Tam too.. He eventually bought a Bimmer. What ever happened to Chung Tam, Joe Monzon and the few originals?

Chung has moved back to China, Joe Chan is running his automotive business, Wayne Chen still has his repair shop, Joe Monza from what I understand is an automotive tech at BMW and Im still here running Scarboro Mazda and regional racing!

ps. The Mustang with the "G4RCE" vanity plate is still in my garage and still run the occasional Solo II!

Carl;

Rad got better after he left Ontario- he was good, but guys like Joe and Murray Jones, and others used to finish ahead of him on a regular basis.

Once he left he immersed himself in Solo 2 in the U.S. and upped his game.

Although having said that -he did come back up for a BFG Pro solo here at the airport in 97 and never made it to the finals. Maybe our local talent pool is deep after all. :)

As he stated in that article:

"We determined our alignment settings during test and tune sessions at various airports, including pads built for training helicopter pilots in Mineral Wells, Texas. Each year we collaborate with several other teams to rent such sites for experimentation."

When you spend the time every year doing that kind of quality practice with other National caliber drivers you benefit big time.. I know a few U.S. national champs would attend these test and tune days in upper Michigan on concrete and by the end of the weekend they had themselves and their cars dialed in for concrete. Then it was off to Salina or Topeka to collect another trophy. ;)

Actually London was a real hotbed of publicity for solo events. Frank Gibb promoted a 3 event series of Street slaloms that ran on the main drags of London, Windsor and Hamilton back in 86-87. It was hard to believe that those cities would close the main street for a weekend for a Solo 2 event, but it was very cool.
Those events were how Tom Hnatiw got into the racing industry. He use to manage a restaurant in Hamilton and after the street slalom there we all went into his restaurant for a bite. He started asking questions about what was going on and the next season he was right into it.
He then got a job with Firestone tires as a motorsports coordinator and later was integral in bringing the Firehawk endurance series to Mosport.
Then when Vandermarel, Lorriman and Rotenberg approached him about Solosport in 1988 - no problem- all the free tires you need! They were able to get all the tire manufacturers on-board and before you knew it they were giving away 5 sets of tires at each event. So yeah 1989-91 are remembered as the Solosport years.
Now if we could just convince retired Paradigm speaker mogul J.Vandermarel that there needs to be a paved acre for the future of Solo2 development somewhere on the outskirts of the big smoke....

And if the government really wants to put their money where their mouth is in regards to the street racing issue. They could fund "SoloWorld" - Miles of shimmering black asphalt, just outside the GTA, no noise complaints, use it all year round for driver skill development....hmmm
