Could someone tell me what root class my car is in for solo 1?
It's a 1983 Porsche 911SC.

Er, maybe not.

Boy, I'm helpful. Maybe later when I get home from work.

Blur, I don't think we've classified that particular car. What are the specs on it? Curb weight, horsepower, torque, engine configuration and displacement? Is it turbocharged? Do tell :)

Thanks for the reply

The North American 911SC series runs from 1978 to 1983. They weight 2750lbs, have struts and torsion bars in front, semi trailing arms and torsion bars in back. Anti-sway bars at both ends. They are of course a rear engine air/oil-cooled flat-6 3.0litre engine which is normally aspirated and uses Bosch CIS injection producing 180hp @ 5500rpm, 175ft-lb of torque at 4200rpm. This is mated to a 5-speed transaxle which doesn't really like shifting gears quickly. You can fit 225's and 245's under the fenders and they have adequate but not amazing brakes.

Performance figure from the factory manual are 7.0 seconds 0-100kph

Lemme know if you need any more info on this or any other 911. Hopefully no more Integra drivers will try and ruin my solo 1 plans for this year like happened last year.

Blur,

I punched your car's numbers into the Classification Spreadsheet (which is available on the Solo Ontario website) and your car would appear to be in the A3 root class (49.7% overall index value, which is well below the A2/A3 cut-off point of 58%). This is a good thing in terms of the number of preparation points you'll have available to you, should you choose to run the car in SuperStock or higher. Hope this is helpful.

How did an Integra affect your classification last year?

Thanks for the, I guess unofficial ruling. Hopefully it stays with that root class.
The Acura modified my bodywork the night before the first Solo last year. Took a while to get on the road again.

Blur,

Sorry to hear of your close encounter with an Integra. That's no fun at all.

I've e-mailed Chris about updating the official spreadsheet with the numbers you've supplied for your car. I'll confirm your car's numbers using another source, but unless they're any drastic differences in the numbers your car will most definitely be in A3. I think it's safe to say this is an official classification at this point...

Looking forward to seeing you at the track this summer,

Thanks

Just wondering, when you plug numbers into this classing formula are you using vehicle dry weight, curb weight, etc.
For horsepower are you using SAE net, SAE gross, BHP, DIN hp, RWHP, etc.

BTW, the HP number I gave you is in DIN hp.

Blur, we've used the published data from the factory for all of the cars (except for a few rare cases, like Jud's Acadian Canso). Our two major sources for this information have been Carpoint.com and Eric's impressive collection of Car Guide magazine. Eric has every Car Guide going well back into the early 80's or late 70's. Oh well, at least he's not collecting potatoes shaped like U.S. presidents ;)

I believe the reported horsepower in both these sources is bhp, although I can't recall off the top of my bald head. Curb weight has been the measure of choice for vehicle weight, since this is what the manufacturers report these days.

For the older cars we've done our best to accurately convert their horsepower numbers from SAE hp to bhp.
I think this has only been an issue so far for some of the older corvettes we classified initially.

It's important to keep in mind that the cars we initially classified were chosen because they represent most of the cars we've seen recently at events. However, the beauty of this new system is that we can easily and quickly plug in any car that comes out to an event as long as they have reliable data (curb weight, hp, torque and displacement) for their car, as I've done with yours.
So, rather than attempting to classify ever possible car we could come up with, we just classified the more common ones and plan to classify rarer ones like yours as we go. So please don't think we intentionally left out your car (or anybody elses), but rather felt it more economical to classify less common cars as needed.

Cheers,

Dave

hehe. "Eric's impressive collection of Car Guide magazine"
Yeah we have a collection like that to. Although i believe it starts in the early 80's.

We also have Road&Track's going back just as far as that if not a little further. I think there are few Car & Driver's from the early 70's aswell.

Wierd what people collect.
