View Full Version : Toyo R-Group, curious
I'm just wondering, curious, as to how many people are actually using Toyo's RA-1.
Hypothetically, if there was some incentive to use Toyo RA-1's, perhaps a huge discount (40%), plus potential for contingencies, would you sacrifice the use of Kumho's V710's or Hoosiers to compete in the Toyo challenge?
Now add to that the ability to run the new R888 before they are released in North America.. (Hypothetically)
This is hypothetically, of course.

all depends who you are, what your goals are
last few years..i've been buying cheap
got on board with the group buys
so in all cases.. i bought stickier (v710's) for a LOT less than the other guys
if there were no deals... and depending on the available sizes
yes RA-1's would be my choice

RA1's are probably the oldest running R comps around

Joe,
I'm still tossing up between running the michelin pilot sport cups or the RA1's. I'm looking forward to the R888's mostly for sizing reasons. If I was being heavily incentivized to use RA1's i would definitly do it, they're still a great tire.
(this is in a racing/sprints format context, not solo context)
cheers.

I am planning to run RA1 and A6 this year.
Not at the same time.

If the price was right, I would get a set for track days and the like, but would not likely run them for solo2.

SoloSprint - RA1's F&R
Autoslalom - A6 F, V710 R
I am buying a set of RA-1's this year for use in Solosprint and to use in club level Solo2 after my current set of V710's are done (which will be soon). As soon as I get around to it I will be signing up for Toyo's R group. However I really hope that the R888 is released and I can run them.

I've been using the RA-1s for the last few seasonn and will continue to use them for lapping.
Looking at the V710s for solo2 starting this year.

Planning on running RA-1's this year for both, so yes I'd definitely be interested.

I have been buy lapping tires lately and the reason they are Yoko instead of Toyo is price. RA1's are way to expensive and I would buy a set only if they were cheaper.

Have now seen two US-based magazines - GRM and Sport Compact Car - discuss both the new R888 Toyo and the [supposedly] new BFG R1 as were presented at SEMA late last fall. Does anyone have any idea if either will be available in Canada this year, and do we know anything at all about how good or bad these tires are?
Thanks

Good answer Joe. :D
The R888 has been out in the rest of the world for a bit now and I've heard nothing but good things about it. Especially that it's sticky from the get go even when cold, fantastic lateral grip and very good in the wet. However all the things I read were during track use, not Solo2. So I doubt they will compare to the V710's or Hoosiers.

I've been through the Ecsta V700 and the Victoracer routes (for sizing purposes) and was looking at the Hoosier A6's this year. I'd think about the RA-1's or the new Toyo's if there was an incentive. It would even peak my interest more to have a 'Toyo Challenge' or some sort of contingency plan.
Actually I'm really disappointed in Kumho and the fact they haven't come to the table with a contingency program. It would seem that the majority of grassroots racers that use R's are on Kumho's. What would it hurt them to offer up a $100 bucks or or a set of tires for those that win some sort of club or provincial title if won on their rubber?

From what I heard, the R888's delay into Canada is partially to blame on existing RA1 stocks with dealers. I havent seen any crazy liquidations yet on the RA1s but they should be expected as the R888 trickles in.
The BFG R1 was an amazing tire and should be something to talk about in 2007 as it will be introduced.
Hankook will import into CANADA in 2007 the long awaited Z214 so this should mix things up a bit. The Z211 will be offered in several compounds too so they will stack up well against the RA1 and new offerings. Look for Hankook to throw big contingency to those using their tires in solo competition.
2007 seems to be a huge year for r compounds...choosing one will be tough.

I'd consider RA-1's...I don't think I'd use R888 because last I checked they didn't have the 245-45-16 I like even though there is a RA-1 in that size.
Tire toss up this year.
Were you talking Solo2 (Regionals?) only for the Toyo Challenge Joe?

Hypothetically speaking, I was thinking of a mini series consisting of 2 events, more of a "club level" event, not to compete with any of the Regionals Autoslaloms or SoloSprints.
This is all hypothetical, of course. LOL

Doesn't affect me but somebody might like to know. From the Toyo UK website:
STOP PRESS!
As if it weren't sticky enough already, TOYO now announce four additional Proxes R888 fitments available in the super soft SG compound. Designed from the outset as a no-compromise ultra-high traction tyre, The SG adds that extra competitive advantage whilst maintaining full road legality!
Available from the end of April 2007, please note that the SG compound is not eligible for entry as 'control' tyre in our sponsored race championships.
Fitments
185/60 HR13 80V SG
205/60 HR13 86V SG
195/50 VR15 82V SG
205/50 VR15 86W SG
*sigh* still no mention of a 245/45-16.
We'll see when/if they show up in 2007 if there will be additional sizes and blow-out prices of RA-1's.
Just over 10 weeks until the first TimeAttack...er, I mean SoloSprint. :D

The R888 will not be here until 2008.
I had a Toyo dealer tell me today that they were trying to get them for this season. Of course he could have just been saying that.
There's nothing wrong with the dealer "trying" to get them. Actually receiving them is another story though.
Um er a little birdy tells me that there's a certain competitor, in multiple disciplines, that'll be sporting a set this year.
But, that's hearsay, and can't be trusted. LOL. Darn Birdie!

I know it won't be me :( no 245/45-16!
I'd like to know what the different compounds are.
GGG: track?
GG: sticky track?
SG: cones?

He didn't say that he was trying to get them, he said Toyo was trying to get them out for this season. This tire has been out in Europe and Japan for quite some time now they shouldn't have any excuses for getting them to North America.

In speaking with the crew about the R888, they will be availalbe in North America in 2 compounds. DOT certification is currently under way, by the US Toyo Team, and members of "Team Toyo" will recieved initial notifications of their arrival, and the discount of 40% on the Level 1, will be applicable to those tires as well.
That's great news!!!

Currently Level 1 (40% disc) is for people running a series where Toyo is the Spec tire, and Solo competitors are Level 4 (25% disc), will this be changing?

Yes, it has changed. Please see the announcement here:

Toyo has taken a major step in supporting Grassroots motorsports. See the main page of SPDA ( http://www.spda-online.ca ) for details.
Hope this helps.

has the list price increased to the point where 40% off tires now is the equivalent of 25% off the old price?
Or is the list price the same?

Price list has not changed. it's the same one, for example, if you went with the GB that's on the Solo1 forums, if you apply the 40% discount, each tire would be reduced in price by another 30 - 50 bucks, depending on the vendor of choice.
Hopefully, the people that participate consider who the sponsor are for CASC and go with Tirecraft.
Hope this helps.

Aren't the GB prices already discounted? I thought we get 40% off list.

The GB's are discounted, but not as low as Code 1. Toyo Dealers are not allowed to discount to the point of Code 1.

well with the prizes, price of 888s, support from Jeff at tirecraft, and howard at talon
it's hard to turn away
the Question is.. do you want to run on A6 or V710's
or run with the "second choice" and get all the perks
what's more important to the Regional competitors?
heck.. i'm surprised more people aren't starting threads to run
the spec tire (R888's) in their class, so they can still have the competition they want, and still fight for the prizes that are offered

I'd be all over a spec tire for the series -- especially given the generosity of the discount Toyo is offering (and the contingency money, too). Of course, I don't run all the events.

Good point -- it never occurs to me that some people need oddly-sized tires because all of my applicaitons are relatively generic. I'll retract my desire for a spec tire.
