Going to depend alot on the car and the temps, super light car and cool weather = no tire heat/grip.
Generally the slicks are like the older hoosiers, heat cycle out long before the rubber wears out.My slicks were new last spring,I have a few laps at the kart track on them(super abrasive)and a bunch of runs on them at the nationals and a tlmc event.Tires show very little wear after that so as long as the rubber keeps gripping I'll get tons of life out of them.I store mine deflated and in my dark basement so it should only be the heat cycling that does them in.
The biggest advantage imo is sizing, especially for smaller cars with 13" wheels. You can get 10" wide r-tires anywhere for late model sports cars easy but the diameter kills the small cars.
A 20x9x13 slick not only offers lower gearing than whats out there now for r-tires(usually about 1.5 inches taller)but is also on average a little over an 1 wider AND much lighter at about 12lbs for the slick.
Are they actually faster,I dunno-if somebody wants to do a back to back test I'll provide the car and wheels with slicks and you provide wheels(I might be able to help there)with a set of 710's/A6's and we'll know for sure.:)
In a pefect world I'd have slicks for hot and dry,710's/A6's for coolish temps,32'r's sc for cold/damp and a set of hoosier wets for well the wet

Anecdotal evidence I've heard is that Hoosiers are the only slicks that are noticably faster than 710's. How much depends on the vehicle. I've driven Hoosier R25's, but only on ultralight formula cars (like sub 500lb FSAE cars). They are very sticky, very light and relatively easy to drive but I doubt they're that much faster on heavier cars (ie: unitbodies).

that is what i'm trying to find out....
i can totally see them making a difference on ultralighte cars.. the super7 guys ran slicks and the results were huge
i just don't know of anyone running slicks on daily driver type of vehicles.....

Well untill the 710's come only 20" tall and 10" wide I guess I'm stuck with a slick.:)
Oh yeah the goodyear(hoosier doesn't list their weights,I'd be surprised if they were heavier) cantivever 13x9.5x13 is 14lbs,the non cantilever tier same size is 9.5lbs.I'd guess the 215-50-13 to be right around 20lbs and the hoosier 225-45-13 to be just under that, saving 10lbs per tire has to be considered along with the possible grip generated.

Don't know if this will help. There's been some of these discussions on the Factory Five Autocross Forum. One of the threads is here
http://www.ffcobra.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php/ubb/get_topic/f/28/t/000778.html
You could search throught the forum for more. General consenus is that the 710's / A6's will hold about 1.4 lateral G's, but a slick on a properly prepared car should hold about 1.7 G's. There also some talk about different makes / compounds too. The FFR Cobras run around 2500 to 2600lbs with driver (Miata-ish weight? I don't know)

I have tested back to back and was shocked at the results.
Venue: Corel Center
Date: late August (warm/sunny)
Tire 1 : 2 Year old Kumho V700 225/50/15 (R) 205/50/15 (F)
Tire 2 : Heat Cycled Goodyear Slicks (softest compound) 20x9x13
Car: 1985 MR2 weight at the time around 1950lbs
Results: The slicks were much easier to drive offering much better feedback and feel. The light weight and small diameter made steering with the throttle possible for the first time with such little power. The clock however showed the old Kumhos to be 1 second faster!
Note: I have been told the Hoosier slick is far superiour to the goodyear for autocross applications.....perhaps Andrew would be the best one to comment......
