View Full Version : Camera Mount

At the last event Feb 2 I noticed the following:
a) camera mounts were always waaay in the back seat
b) they were sturdy enough to survive a head on collision at 50kph (:))
My question: Why not mount them nearer the front and how sturdy do they have to be? Marsh - since you're the engineer - if it's a 3lb camera will attaching a mount to the headrest of the passenger seat not do the trick?
Thanks,
W.

When I first bought my camcorder I built a mount that clamps to the passenger head rest. I found too much vibration so I used nylon tiedowns to preload the seatback. This worked well enough in the Civic for winter solo but I bough a real (IO Port, from CSC Racing) camera mount for Solo 1. It clamps to the roll bar just over my right shoulder. The footage is quite good with a sturdy mount. Especially good footage is available when a white Civic spins in front of you on a wet track.

Pokey .... the Ioport Mount that Jeff refers to is one of the best out there ... it is used by many "professional" drivers in their cars (with a safety strap)
Ahhhhhhhhhhh Jeff .. you could not resist yet another poke at me : ) .... so when are you going to send me a copy of the spin ????

I sent you an e-mail through this forum an hour or two ago. You want to talk to Mr. Pratte. I gave him a CD on Sunday.

I found this the other day. Directions for making a headrest mount like was mentioned earlier.

My camera mount is where it is for two reasons.
A - it's more stable than the Canadian shield! Anything that hangs out will vibrate. There is no way around it, it just will.
B - It's really out of the way. I don't have to worry about messing up the camera aim by moving the seat etc.
IO Port mounts are very nice, but if you don't have a cage to mount it to then your kind of up the creek aren't you?
BTW I built mine in 30 minutes with material I found in the scrap bin at school, and a drill.

It took a couple of tries to bend the plate just right so that it focused out the window, rather than on the dash though.
