In all fairness, that was a pretty close location for a wall to be when you're dealing with unexperienced drivers on a pylon course in a parking lot with far too much power at their disposal.

Absolutely. As much as he did make a mistake, we all do. Clearly, this was very poor course design.

I've made lots of dumber mistakes than that and got away with a lot less money if any at all (actually only one cost me money, and a change was made to our rule book as a result).
That was just way to close to have the wall. Especially straight on!

My first thought on this was why would they put inexperienced drivers so close to a wall? With such a wild car I'd almost expect this happen. Try explaining that to the Michael Shumachers on non-motorsport car forums.
