I know that I should change my brake pads for Solosprint, although I am a bit worried about how hard it is going to be. Mazda brakes aren't the easiest to change. At the moment only Carbotech is making pads for my car. Any thoughts on what compound I should use? Also do I have to change rotors as well? What about the rear pads?

Hey steve,

I ran Hawk HP+ in my prot5 for soloschool and one lapping day. I never changed them, I use them on the street too. You don't NEEEED to change, its just better. I have heard that you ought to change rotors if you are changing pads because they should mate properly.

I know what you mean about not being so easy to change... they are a pain. Those stupid little flimsy metal clips... guh...

Yeah, but Hawk isn't making brakes for the Mazdaspeed6, also when I look at the MS6 brakes I don't think they use those stupid metal clips, they use wires of some kind.

Same brakes as MS3 right? You shouldn't have to wait too long before you have more options for pads.
Buying a set of track pads saves you buying many sets of expensive OEM pads...

The issue that we had with the MazdaSpeed Protege was that Wellman made the OE pad, and Hawk (the performance division) was slow to make pads for the car.

I have left a message for the Hawk rep I have to see if they make the pad yet. I don't see it in the listing, but it is possible that it either exists or is in the works.

I will NOT go on to the track without changing my pads. I was slow in changing my pads this past week, and I went to a club Solo 2. I had brake fade in an AUTOCROSS! Totally unacceptable.

According to some of the U.S. Mazdaspeed6 owners the front pads are the exact same as the 04-07 Audi S4, this apparently has been confirmed and I have seen pictures and they do look exactly the same.

Ok, so I just got off of the phone with Hawk, and this is a number that will be released by June 1, 2007, we hope. They do not even have a number for it yet.

Now, the bad news. Initially, the pads will only be available in HPS, HP+ and Ceramic. Unless there is significant call for other pads, they won't be releasing them very soon.

If you want to try the S4 pad, that is something that is more easily available, but in the same compounds. Also, there are 2 Audi S4 pads, and I am trying to figure out which is more similar to the Mazda pad.

Hawk is looking into rear pads for these cars.

This front pad shape is VERY common, as most of the European cars seem to be moving towards this pad shape. I could list 25 pads that look the same, and maybe 3 will be exactly the same.

I think that the VW pad will be as good a fit, and comes in more pad materials. More importantly, we keep the VW pads in stock in LOTS of materials. In stock is HPS, HP+ and Blue.

Without having them all on the floor, it is hard to compare exactly. But, I think we will have a solution soon.

Anyone have a set of pads they can copy for us? Anyone get along with a dealer well enough to see if they can pull a trace for the OE pads?

Thanks Pete,
Here is where I got the info complete with pictures.

Also I might be willing to take one of my pads off or I can probably call Mazdaspeed Motorsports and see about getting a trace.

EBC has a list of all pad numbers. Here's what you have for the Mazda6 2.3 turbo (which is what I assume you have):

FORD Focus 2.5 Turbo 2005- DP31574C DP41574
MAZDA 6 2.3 Turbo 2005- DP31574C DP41574
VOLVO C70 2.5 Turbo T5 2006- DP31574C DP41574
