An update on the 2003 CASC-OR Regional Solo II season.
I have been a little slow out of the starting gate but work is under way to get the season off to a fine start.
I have been in contact with all the club reps requesting dates and venues for events. Currently we have 2 confirmed dates:
May 25th - St Lac - Picton Airport
June 15th - HADA - Brampton Sports & Recreation Centre
Sept ? - PMSC - Douro Arena
I hope to have the final schedule and rule set available by the Open House to be held April 6th at CSC Racing in Newmarket.
If your club is holding a regional Solo II event be ready to help and assist in the running of the event. If your club date is not finalized ask your competition director or Solo II representative to finalize the plan and submit it for the 2003 season.
Rule changes are to be minimal with the intention of adopting a different rule set in 2004 (CNAC rules). A few cars will be reclassed. New cars will be classified, etc.
One change that will be implemented is an elimination of the 2% bonus for street tires. While upsetting a few competitors it is a change that has received mostly positive response.
I would liked to have added a class for street tires such as been tried successfully in the US but feel at this time this would only dilute some of the classes resulting in additional underfilled classes.
Hope eveyone had a great winter and will be ready to contest the 2003 version of the Regional Solo II Championship.

Who are the 2003 sponsors? Specifically for tires...

What about a paxed street tire class, that is similtaneous? Kind of like the way we do Rookie. They still get a class trophy if they manage it, but they can also win a street tire trophy.

this sport has been around for a long time.
the rules were designed for the masses, for the enjoyment of the sport, not the individuals who can scream the loudest.
if you have a pig that isn't competitve in your class.. blame the rule book
if you have street tires and don't want to spend the money on
r tires.. blame the tire manufactures
bring what you have, try the best you can, enjoy the sport for what it is.
if you are there for the huge prize money, and hardware, you shouldn't be involved in the sport.
keep up the good work ROB!!!!

No offence to Robb,But why are you cheering finboy?all Robb did was delete the 2% street tire bonus.Certainly not earth shattering news as we all knew it was likely to happen this year.
As far as ragging on Marsh's comment about paxing street tire guys,in case you didn't know he runs r-tires and is the series champ, hardly drives a pig.He was just looking out for some of the new blood that would likely drive to and compete on street tires at events, exactly what the street tire bonus was intended for in the first place.
Personally I think the tire bonus should stay for the above reason alone, the 2% isn't enough to be a way to win on streets alone,in other words if you lose to a guy on streets, than you would have REALLY lost if the same guy ran r-tires

I like the idea of the separate trophy for a street tire class and it could work if we had someone to police the use of street tires.
This was one of the reasons for dropping the bonus. The rules mandated an "s" to be placed after the number if the bonus was being derived and the registration form had a space for the declaration but time and again the rules were not followed and I received complaints about people starting the season on streets then moving to comp tiires at one or more events without properly recording their change with timing/scoring.
Also, currently and over the horizon we can see the tire manufacturers are releasing "street" tires that are closer and closer to r compounds when heated to appropriate temperatures.
We do wish to attract new blood to our sport although I am now unclear as to whether the regional series is the starting point for newbies or should it be the non regional series "club events".
This could result in an interesting discussion in that some club series are asking for experience and pedigree while the regional series which travels from venue to venue and has some of the best Autox competitors in Ontario are trying our best to get out new blood. Such as us organizing rookie schools.
Thanks for the kind words Dave. I hope the regional series will continue to expand and grow and hope we do attract the best competitors that Ontario can develop.
I have been quite quiet during my time as director. I hope to particpate more in open discussion and do ask any and all to submit comments, complaints and suggestions for the series.
CASC-OR is in the middle of a great rebirth. Solo II is, or at least, can be at the front of the line for growth and particpation.
I think one thing that could really help would be for some competitors to step forward and offer to help running regional events. I know that that clubs are responsible for most of the tasks but in the big picture if we had a chief timer/scorer, a chief scrutineer, etc. then it would help ensure that rules are applied evenly at each event and that the integrity of the series is maintained.
I would like to implement a system of vehicle spot checks at events. Say take 10 cars at random and have them inspected for prep points declared and such. Not as a way of catching people per se, but rather to impart knowledge to those that may be new to our sport.
What do you guys think? Any volunteers?
Robb

I'll be the Chief Timer/Scorer
I have some experience and will be at most, if not all events!

Wes
Thanks, I accept your offer.
You performed in this role last year and I know you were much appreciated. Results, at least provisional, were usually posted within a day or two of the event and your constant updating of the web site as the Solo II webmaster was exceptional as well.
Thanks for stepping up!

-i'm cheering Rob because its a PITA role that a ton of people would love to have, he's volunteered his time and efforts for the second year now. If you have any clue on what goes on behind the events and AT the events you'd have a better understanding why i'm cheering him
-street tires are just another factor, "street tires" now a days are really close to some of the R-compounds
just like life, nothing is fair, basically the one with the most money will normally come out on top.
yes the rules and regs try to keep things even on a even playing field, but its an illusion.
-i have no idea who Marsh is, i wasn't ragg'n on his ass, and i have no idea how he fair'd in his competition, who is this shyguy Marsh you are talking about?
-that spot check ideas is good on paper, instead of the random checks
check the top 2 or 3 in a class at random at each event
-it will keep more of the players honest, and educated
also will keep the number of protests and complaints down

As a matter of fact I have a way better than average idea of what goes on behind the scenes, having made the effort to organize, host, fund, score, time, scrutineer every car every event, provide trophys etc,etc.etc.-for a solo series held in bracebridge for 3 years.
Marsh is the 2002 regional solo 2 series champ,a very hard fought and incredably close series,I don't run PITL solo's simply because its a 6 hour round trip to tow my car and I prefer to race in a series that isn't always won by the guy with the most money.I bought my car for $200 and prepared it to run casc solo rules in BSS,which I won-on street tires no less.
I get the feeling from some of the PITL members posting here that they think they are the primadonna's of the solo world, and yet you seem to have no idea about the province wide series.

Robb: Since, I can not guarantee my attendance at event event this year, what I can do is offer assistance to the chief scrutineer in checking some of the cars (might as well do something during registration) prior and/or during the event(s). Not like I have to do any setup with the car before or inbetween runs.

Thats great Taylor. Glad to have your assistance. Helping to ensure the integrity of the series will be a great benefit for all.
