View Full Version : Tire max load

Does load rating matter when looking at r-compound tires?
The stock SP9000 on my MP3 have a ~1200 lbs max load .. and the only 17" r-compounds that will fit are 205/40 and in that size, the V700 Ecsta only has a ~900 lbs rating. For that matter many of the 15" and 16" ones have a lower rating too. 225/50-15 seems to give the closest size to stock and also keep a load rating that is >= with the stock tires.
Will it negatively affect drivability to go with a much lower max load rating?

It's one of the specs published for tires ...
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/tirespecskey.html#maxload
Just wondering if it would be very important for competition since significant load can be generated on tires due to cornering force, etc. As opposed to daily driving when your tires would get extra loading from carrying more stuff around in the car, etc, etc.
So .. if a tire actually has a lower load rating, is there potential to over work the tire?
Just noticed that although the Kumho V70A has a fairly low rating, Toyo has the RA-1 in the same size but with an ~1100lbs max load.

You'll be fine. It's not like you're driving a portly VW. ;)
You sure you want to run 17's? That's a lot of weight and there are gearing advantages to going smaller. You can fit 15's over the brakes on a MP3 can't you?

Yes I will in all likelyhood get 15's. Hopefully 15x7.5 but I'm not sure if I am brave enough to try the low offset that they come in.
Just curious about whether it was anything to be concerned about. This is more important for people in the USA who must run 17's in stock class.

i was aware what it was.....
my comment was more in the "why are you asking category". You won't have any problems. :)
run 15's too.......that is unless your plaining on running some US nat. level events(at the local level US guys won't care.....)

15's it is.
So ... 2800 lbs of car ... 205/50-15 should be enough tire right?
Because Marsh has mentioned his problems in a 3000 lb car even on 225/45's which are about the same load rating as 205/50.
Integras and Civics often run 205/50 but they are 2600 lbs so my car is somewhere in the middle but there are no 215 tires :)

Can you physically fit 225's on? If so then go with them.
Food for thought, the top G-Stock CRX in the US runs 225 hoosiers on 5" rims(placed 2nd in 2002 and won in 2001). Who said you need a wide rim to match the tire. Atleast in SOLO 2 its all about how much rubber you have on the ground.
please stop talking about "load ratings". Look to run the maximun rim width with the maximum matching tire width and maybe push your luck a little and go with a extra wide tire. Experiment.

OK I'll shut up now :o
225's should fit. Hopefully they won't rub. Wheels are 7" wide as I couldn't find a single 7.5" wheel that was 15" and had a high enough offset ( only 17x7.5 has a high enough offset ) .
Done. Sorry to bother you. hehe

Couldn't find a wheel? C'Mon, you can get anything made, any width, offset, bolt pattern that you heart desires. Its all about where you look.

Well hell ya if I could afford custom ... that is a completely different world. Although last time I checked, Keizer didn't make their magnesium centers in 5-bolt.
15x13? hahaha ... unfortunately stock class has to stay inside the fenders. No plans to play in the "mod" class just yet.
Sheesh, do your research before suggesting stuff ;)
