whats the deal with the ECSTA's? i've heard that they go bad very quickly. (ive heard anywhere from 1 autocross day to 2 lapping days, and thats all is needed to waste them.)

is this true? how do they compare vs the victos?

thanks.

I had the Ecsta V700's last year and the tread separated from the tire carcass quickly, right at the shoulder. Odd because I was running near 3 degrees neg. camber. I found the grip similar to V700's but their life span was considerably less. I'd never get the ecstas again.

I've heard a lot of similar stories.

I've only used the Ecsta's for one weekend but found less crisp during during then the Victoracers. This, despite that they were a lower profile tire.

I also found that they had just a tad less ultimate grip then the Victoracers especially in the steady-steady phase of cornering.

When these wear out I'm going back to my Toyos.

My V700s last the season last year, but they had horribly uneven wear. I was heavily wearing the outer edge even with 3 degrees...

I think the soft sidewalls are partly to blame. In high-load corners with mild bumps the car "wobbled" a lot on the V700s. Not so when I went back to the Yokos. When the A032R SCs come out they are going to be a great tire.

My tires looked like they were going to seperate, but they never did. In fact they wore almost as well as the V700 Victoracers I ran the year before. Like the Victoracer they hardened before they wore out. I think the wear is less of an issue for Solo-2 then it is for Solo-1.

BTW Andrew, the reason I'm not running them again is because I found they didn't like my relatively heavy car. With the Beettle being in the same weight territory I imagine you would find the same problem. They simply lack the side wall stiffness for a heavy car.

marsh, thanks alot for the input - and yes, we are in the same boat.

im thinking of going with the victo's this year, or maybe even pirelli's.

what are your choices for this year marsh? what size rim are you running?

ive got some new lightweight 17x7's.

I'm running 225/50-15. I went with the Ecsta only because it came in 225/45-15, which gave me noticably better straigt line. I'll go with that size again if I find it in something affordable. I'm not sure what you'll find in a 17". You may be wiser to use your stock rims for R's or better yet to invest in a cheap set of small OD race rims (typically $100 - $200 a wheel).

For 17's you may be stuck with 205/40-17 for Toyo
But 225/45-17 are available for Kumho or Hoosier or Michelin
But you should put them on a 17x7.5 wheel.

Or 235/40-17 in Kumho or Yokohama
But you should put them on a 17x8 wheel (at least).

Hey roooo, what rims/r compounds fit the Protege/P5?

15's will fit over the brakes just fine.
Stock tire size is 23.7" od

Bolt Pattern: 5x114.3 mm
Hub / Center Bore: 67.1 mm
Offset: As high as possible. No lower than +45 mm on a 7" wide wheel if you want to get wide tires on there ( > 205 ) .

Pretty close to the sentra...except for the 5 bolt thing :(

Yup. Although it is the same as the RSX except for the bigger hub size.
And the RSX has way more space to fit bigger wheels & tires than the Protege.

About the same as the Prelude as well, except for the tire OD.

4-bolt , 5-bolt . bah .. what do you mean .. you don't have custom-made 3 piece racing wheels? just swap out the centers! hehehe :o

Hey Marsh, do you happen to know the hub / centre bore size on the 5th Gen?

Marsh

4.5 inches by my tape-measure...

I thought Honda center bores were usually 64.1 mm
The 5-bolt pcd is 4.5" (114. 3 mm)

Oops, I meant 2.5 inches!

So when you tell your G/F you have 8 inches...what is it really? :)

Bah! I wish I read this before struggling to take my wheels off! Seems the salt and corrosion is holding them on kinda tight. Well, I got them off and measured between 64.05mm and 64.08mm.
