Another update on the CASC-OR regional Solo II series

I am happy to announce that Mobil 1 has agreed to another year of sponsorship of the regional Solo II schedule. I welcome them back and hope that we will have their support for many more years.

Additionally, I am proud to announce that ActionFront Data Recovery labs headed by our good friend and fellow competitor Nick Majors has decided to help out another series of amateur Motorsport in Ontario and throw his support into Regional Solo II by co-sponsoring the series.

Tee shirts will once again be offered to all series registered competitors - although the shirts will not be available in time for the open house, they will be available in time for the first event.

Decals will be mandatory and available in 2003 (Perry Ianuzzi has done his usual great job of design work) and I would expect all competitors will be happy to recognize the contribution of our 2 main sponsors this year and proudly wear the decal at each event. The search continues for addtional support and others may come on board when they realize the benefit of being involved with our series.

We do have a couple of more dates to add to the schedule (5, so far) and expect a couple of announcements in the next few weeks.

The schedule, so far:

May 25th - St LAC - Picton Airport
June 15th - HADA - Brampton Sports & Recreation Centre
June 22 - OMSC - location TBD - possibly Mosport
July 20 - Competition Corvette Club - Bronte GO station
Sept 7th - PMSC - Druro Arena

So mark your calendars for the competition dates and be sure to attend the open house on April 6th at CSC Racing in Newmarket. CSC Racing will be offering a tax free day (15% discount) on all products including helmets. It's a great way to get some great equipment at a good discount.

Once again if you don't see your club on the schedule contact your Competition Director or Club President and ask them to establish a date and location. I sure would like to increase the number of competition days, wouldn't you?

I think it's a great idea for the decals. Especially if it encourages more sponsorship $$$. Is it safe to assume that they will be magnetic?

If I have an Action Front decal and a Mobil decal is that good enough, or must I run the new decal?

Hey Marsh

The new decal will be mandatory and will be similiar to what has been run in Solo 1 for serveral years. Addtional sponsor decals are always welcome and encouraged, certainly.

You should be able to fit it in somewhere.

Keith

The decals will not be supplied with magnetic backing but magnetic material is available from many sources.

Is it going to be best x-1 / x events...

or

x-2 / x events?

Any idea?
Will this depend on the locations, number of events, conflicts, etc????

I need to know to plan a potential schedule to run in this series...
The details are still quite hazy... and any clarification would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

Typically we allow at least 2 throw aways - or more depending on number of events that make up the regional championship schedule.

Once the determination of number of events is made we establsh number of throwaways. If events are cancelled we drop 1 point scoring event for each event not run.

Last year we scored 5 of 8.

In previous years if my mind serves correclty it was:

2001 - 5 of 7
2000 - 5 of 7
1999 - 4 of 6
1998 - 5 of 7

Hope this helps.

Only 5 events lined up? :(

Please tell me this isn't the final schedule

If the issue is lack of volunteers/help, please let me know, I'll be happy to pitch in wherever needed :)

Any idea on where "PMSC - Druro Arena" is?

I can make 3 of the 5 so far...
Is 5 likely going to be the total # of events? I need to plan out what days I will be participating. It is getting ominously close to the season!

Druro is near Peterborough. Not a bad drive.
Maybe 1.5 hrs or something at the most .. can't remember but it was not bad at all. And a fun event.

soloZ
03-26-2003, 12:27 AM
Yeah the drive isn't too bad. last year I got totally lost though, and the worst part is I drive past there at least four or five times a year. I ended up getting off the 115 at the 7A exit which takes you to Lindsey  But I would also blame that to all the fog around there that morning man was it thick.

I am hoping that we will get at least 2 more events, maybe 3 and quite possibly 4.

TAC is working on securing a date and facility. WOSCA should check in soon. TLMC is a possibility. AND we have another idea for a venue that would be quite interesting :>)

Please keep checking back as the season is fast approaching and I do want to keep the good mometum going that we enjoyed last year.

That would be pretty awesome.

Imagine, actually getting to use 4th gear in an Auto Slalom!!

RacerRobb

Nope, not Canada's Wonderland, although a very tempting idea. A 4th gear course, although interesting is prohibited under our rule set. Unless you have a 10 speed close ratio gear box.

Actually, I did run an event at Canada's Wonderland about 20 years ago. A group of Honda/Michelin drivers, a few other interested parties and I were contracted to drive several rent-a-rides around the lot at high speed for 24 hours.

It was a durability/fuel economy test for MolySlip lubricants. Man that was a lot of fun. Six rental rides, in some cases nose to tail for hours at a time. Some non-race types bailed after a couple of hours although our shifts were to last 4 hours. I did 2 full shifts and a half shift, 10 hours of seat time over a 24 hour period. Maybe that's why I would love to do a major endurance ride.

Anyway, we burned the tires right down to the steel belts and this was in the rain. I would have loved to see the rental agents face when the 6 cars were returned a day ater being rented with steel belts hanging out.

Later

LMAO I almost had to grab fourth at Picton last year. Short gears and long run on landing strip = 4 th gear

Not to let the cat out of the bag but I think the "interesting venue" Robb is refering to is an event I'm trying to make happen. It is to be held at the old Bracebridge go-kart track, now closed. The track is just over a 1/2 mile in length with a decent mix of corners and even a little bit of an elevation change.Turn one is an off camber decreasing radius right hander over a crest,I think Brent will remember me backing it in there driving his neon!
This event depends on being able to arrange insurance for this 1 event,I hope Robb can help out with this in some way. This event would be close to a solo 1,but the speeds are kept reasonable with nothing more than 2nd gear needed.BTW the fastest run to date is a 50.5 second run in my old crx si.
I'd love to watch Z06's etc. run there, keep you fingers crossed as I intend to have this as a regional only-just us and no other club interference's= lots of runs!
I'll try to keep people posted, anybody with insurance ideas can post them please.

Just a bit of an update,Robb gave me the news yesterday that I can purchase insurance for a single event thru casc,so that hurdle seems cleared. The track owner has agreed to rent me the track. Our club up here "Muskoka Auto Xtremes" will be hosting the event, with the intent of having a BBQ/drinks, trophy's etc.
In the past this event has been well received as the competitiors aren't required to work,no cones(just stop cone)and the entire track is visable from the spectator area.
I'm interested in getting a estimate on attendance from the solo 2 regional crowd,I'm thinking around 40 to make this feasable, and to not have too many that we only get 3-4 runs in.
Keep your fingers crossed but it looks like I may only have to set a date!

You guys will absolutely love this track! I ran a handful of events there when Tom still had his series running, it's easily worth the drive to Bracebridge, very tight, no room for error (you go off, you're in the weeds). I definetely wanna go!

very tight, no room for error (you go off, you're in the weeds)

It might be hard to convience ASN that it is a Solo 2 event without some statigically placed cones for insurance purposes. The only other option would be to have it insured as a Solo 1 event, then no cones needed.

ice/solo racer
03-28-2003, 05:03 PM
Thanks alot you stewpiddass,Wes you can place the cones where ever you like,on the track of course.
Seriously though, this track shouldn't present any problems and if I have to place a couple of cones to make the pen pushers happy then so be it.The speeds truly aren't an issue,Picton was flat out in 3rd for me and this track layout keeps speeds outa 3rd gear for sure.
I don't want to hold a solo 1 event, not sure how much extra the insurance is but as a solo 2 event the cost is to be $30 per driver and presents a better value as such.
Besides, with only regional cometitors invited you'd think that driving errors should be kept to a min.
I will work with Robb to sort this issues out and try and have a date for solo sign up day(hopefully).

The last time I heard those exact words it cost me $3500

If a club wants to do something like this fine, but I don't think that regional competitors should be forced to miss an event because they don't think it's safe.

ice/solo racer
03-29-2003, 03:46 PM
Marsh,I don't think you should be judging the track as unsafe if you never been there. In 3 years of events, with a bunch of locals totally new to this sort of thing,we only had a couple of minor off track excursions-with no damages.
Wosca holds solo events on a speedway lined with concrete walls don't they?-I think thats nuts, this track has nothing but fields in all directions.

Stephen Tong attended 1 event and was asking back then if I'd hold a regional-so I guess he saw nothing wrong or blatenly dangerous.Besides some of the courses laid out at say the hersey center has cars heading straight at curbs before swerving between the narrow laneways-do you think this is unsafe?the course layout in Peterbough had us head thru a chicane heading right at a huge concrete base for a light standard before going around it-twice per run!
For a guy that puts his shiny newish car side by side against some local oval trackers every saturday night you sound a bit timid.
I don't care if you miss a great event but don't knock it without first hand knowledge-go ahead and use a throw away-thats what I did for the wosca event.

Marsh

Once again you guys have missed the point like a blind archer. I'm not affraid of a cart track. The day I did the $3500 I still finished the rest of my runs. If the director judges the event safe then I will compete. The point is that regionals are taken seriously by many competitors. The reason we throw 2 events away in overall scoring is primarily so that competitors can avoid extreme driving distances (like Chatham to Ottawa, which one WOSCA member did last year). The point isn't to skip events that a competitor is uncomfortable running. I am opposed to "Solo 1 and 1/2" events (except for the Shoot Out where it is perfectly appropriate)

BTW, WOSCA did not want to host a regional at Delware, we simply had NO other option. Frankly I'm surprised it was approved. Fortunately we now have a proper parking lot.

Oh, and miataboi; if you don't think I've got balls you're welcome to come out to Delware on April 25th and see just how big my balls are.

finboy
03-30-2003, 02:48 AM
there are curbs at the hershey center???

what curbs?? i don't see any curbs..

and Marsh, please leave your balls where they are, i'm sure they are lovely

if you want to be Cocky guy racing, go ahead all the power to you, but to some who don't know you personally, it gives the appearance that your head is too big even for a 2xl helmet

most courses are designed to be run as safe as possible, some might like the design and have no problems with it, where others might not find it safe.

no one forces anyone to compete at any motorsport event.

just because a director or club designs a course, doesn't automatically make it safe everyone should know that.

if one feels that it is unsafe, they can either make a suggestion, or not participate.

everyone is an adult, and can make their own decision.

i don't see what the issue is of running on a kart track

Marsh I'm not a blind archer-your comments were clear to me,I didn't start the no balls thing.I just didn't want the impression of an unsafe event started by someone who's never been to it.
Oh yeah I understand the extreme driving thing-this event is only 45 minutes for me-as opposed to a 5-9 hr round trip tow for all other events.
Hey Finboy, not sure if your serious or not but I remember curbs for sure when running the double header there-you know the little concrete islands with trees.Hmmm, maybe my cars so slow I have time to look around and notice the little things!;)

I'm glad to see some action on this forum. I hope the competition is this hot, this competition year. It promises to be a great year for Solo II as we have some great events lined up and/or pending.

We need to keep perspective on this whole thing. I want to increase the level of competition at the regional events and allow the regional competitors to be satisfied that they are competiting at the best sites, run by the best group of Motorsport Enthusiasts.

Diverse, different sites offering up challenging courses is what I believe should make up the regional championship. Changing types of pavement, courses set up by different individuals, smooth lots and rough runways ask for more from the competitor then running the same venue weekend after weekend.

To do well in the regional championship one most adapt to these varied locales, one must travel - sometimes great distances - to compete. It is, and should remain a challenge. If one looks at the national tour in the U S of A you will see they travel from coast to coast and back again. Not an insignificant commitment.

Do I wish travel far and wide. Well, sort of. I did travel to PEI this past summer to compete at the Canadian Nationals. Would I do it again? In a heart beat! It was a great event, the people were great, the event was superbly organized, the food was outstanding, etc.

We must keep our events safe. We must not impose unsafe venues on our competitors. I think our track record speaks for itself. Let's keep it that way AND at the end of the day of competition we all go home satisfied, healthy and wanting the next event to start - NOW!

[Standing down off of my soapbox]

See you at the open house!

Regarding running events at Wonderland...

As long as your asshole points to the floor there wll not be any Solo 2's at Wonderland.

Last spring some HADA peeps were invited to a PACER anti-street racing media whore-up at Wonderland. It was a great cause, the cops and media were out in full force, but it suffered from poor implementation.

Anyway, we were asked to set-up a small Solo 2 course and do some demo runs with reporters and politicians in the car. The idea was to present Solo 2 as an alternative to street racing.

We gladly obliged and an few of us took time off work to give Solo 2 some good spin.

Well the head rent-a-cop @ Wonderland went nuts as soon as we pulled out the pylons. He couldn't handle the thought of us laying down a bit of rubber and de-flowering his beautiful asphalt. We weren't doing burn-outs, but you know how we tend to lay down a bit of rubber in the corners. What killed me was that his "pristine lot" was littered with broken beer bottles as far as the eye could see.

We ended up setting up the course anyway but this panty waist stood there screaming at us the whole time. I was driving Alex B's ITR and I could hear panty waist screaming at someone (probably me, could have been Dave George) over the engine and through my helmet.

If I'm not mistaken we were there for 3 hours and this guy spent 1..5 hours screaming at us, and the other 1.5 hours begging the cops to make us stop. I guess he didn't realize the cops invited us.

As I said, this guy was the chief super-cop in charge of the lot and he want's nothing to do with Solo anything.

This icing on the cock was that the media mis-represented us as "Crazy Street Racers in the Wonderland lot" so the whole PACER message was lost. Oh well, we really tried.

I still think PACER is a great initiative, but I've lost all hope in the media. If they report that the sky is blue I'd suggest you check for yourself. Bastards.
