View Full Version : What's Your Class?

Now that the rule book's out, it's time to figure out your class.
I'm adding 10 points to my 64.4 to move up to GT2.
Who will I be running against??

Not me. I'm in 'Prepared':( Hopefully no one else is.
Hey, I only have to put one letter on my car:p That oughta save me a nickel.:D
I'll be in GT3 this year, with a D16Z6 engine (a tiny little SOHC 1.6L engine that makes 125 hp) instead of the larger Integra engine I, um, attempted to run the last few years :) Should be fun!

GT3? what happened to the D series build up?
the D-series build-up will come later in the season, or maybe not until next season. It all depends on if I find a decent job in the next few months. But for now I'll be running a stock D16Z6 with my Tein suspension, lightened flywheel, high flow cat and all the authorized mods at the +1 level. This puts my car right against the PI ceiling for GT3. I don't plan on using the brakes much :P

Hmmmm ....
I so far I am up to 20 PIP's for sure Which puts my little Civic into GT-1
If I play a bit .... I "may" be able to get down to GT-2 .... but that will not be as much fun
We shall see

I hope to run a number of events (at least 7 to get scored for the year) with my new 350Z.
With a starting PI of 79.9 - it puts me right at the top for Grand Touring 1 - with no room for upgrades beyond stock.
Other than track tires - the car will be unmodified - but I do have the track package option with Brembo's.
Figuring out rear wheel drive should be kick.
Nick
(Note - rumour has it that one of the cars I may be completing against is Chris Sorensen's BMW. His 328I starts in Grand Touring 3 - but his preps take him up to GT-1.)

Nick,
The two Honda's in your driveway qualify you to become a HADA member. Maybe you'd like to sign up? :)
I gotta say, one thing I really like about the new Z is the exhaust note. It is really warm and nice sounding. Dare, I say it, it's sort of Ferrari like in some respects.
Can I get a ride?
My next door neighbour just brought home a burnt orange (or whatever that colour is) 350Z, Performance model. The thing is just beautiful to look at and sounds really nice too, as Caius mentioned. Alan at KHF has a beautiful silver 350Z with massive AP Racing brakes and calipers and equally massive Volk rims. That car is drop dead gorgeous.
Honda desperately needs to bring out their 2.2L S2000 coupe to keep up with the likes of the 350Z and RX-8! Come on Honda, enough with the luxo Acura-badged cruisers already! We want performance and we want it NOW! Hehe...
Nick, I think it's time we increase the suspension rating on the 350Z. With all the track experience you've had running your Sentra and your 350Z Track underneath you, I fear for the GT1 crowd :o

Speaking of luxo Acura-badged cruisers, I will be running my 93 Legend coupe. Let's if I got this right: Starting PI is 63.8. Springs and shocks, a CAI, and ECU chip brings it to 73.8. Throw on some decent tires, and better brakes, and I should be ready to get my ass kicked by all you veterans in GT-2 ;)
ScotcH, is this the black 6 speed manual Legend coupe that came out to one of HADA's lapping evenings at Shannonville last year?
BTW, the air intake is a free mod (doesn't cost any PIPs) once you've move up one class from your starting class, which you've done. So I think your PIP total is actually at 72.8, which gives you a couple PIPs to use if you want to run non-stock alignment or do some other kind of upgrade.

A small amount of de-contenting should get me down to the top of GT1 as well. Should be fun . I'm going all out this year and changing the spark plugs AGAIN !!

Actually, it's white, but it's probably the one you're thinking of ... not too many 6-speeds around :) I borrowed your helmet, and had Hanif (sp?) and John P for some instruction. John helped to finish my brake pads for me

That makes sense, and I do plan on running non-standard alignment (need all the understeer help I can get!), but I thought that the alignment would be covered under the 7 PIPs for suspension (springs and shocks)?

The alignment is covered under the 7 PIP shock/spring mod. Dave must have just had a brain hicup. Either that or he was day dreaming about the Dixie Chicks again.
white Legend, my bad! Yeah, non-stock alignment is included with the 7 PIP suspension category. I misread your post above and thought you were still using the original shocks...silly me!
I've always lusted after the 6 speed manual Legend Coupe...it's still a great looking coupe and if you ever blow the engine you can bolt a NSX engine in there since they share the same block. 290 hp in that car would be yummy!

My high torque 1.8l with coilovers, stock alignment and stripped interior puts me in SGT3.
This should be funny.:(

hello
i am new to this and am still trying to figure out this PI thing...
...how do i know if i start at a +1 rating or not?...
i have a '99 civic si which puts me at Touring2 and a PI of 53.9
it has a full coilover kit - +5 PIP
intake - +0 PIP
headers - +1 PIP
cat back exhaust - +0 PIP (if i'm starting at +1 rating?)
tie bars (upper front/back, lower back) - +0 PIP
front h-bar brace - +0 PIP
that would make my PI 59.9 (?)
which would put me in Touring 1 (?) (ouch) (or possibly Sports 4)
...can someone tell me if and how far i'm off?
thanks!
dan :)

Check the latest rule book [page 34]---A full coil over mod is now worth 7 pips !! Caught me by surprise-- I'll have to do some re -thinking.

Anyone that trailers their car (no street use Adam!) might only drive it 20-30 hours max a year. I'd say that puts them at a significant disadvantage. 7 PIPs for coilovers is pretty steep to say the least, especially since you incur a two class jump regardless of where you start. For the ITR's this means that in order to maintain a competitive edge you need to spend a few thousand dollars to max your PIP's in SGT3. Not really conducive to budget racing.

Dan,
Start with your base car: '99 Civic Si with a PI of 53.9 in Touring 2. Next, list all your mods and their PIP value.
-full coilover kit: 7 PIP
-intake: 1 PIP (0 PIP in base class+1)
-header: 2 PIP
-cat back exhaust: 1 PIP (0 PIP in base class+1)
-tie/strut bars: 1 PIP (0 PIP in base class+1)
Next, let's look at the mods that cost points no matter what class you're in. That would be the coilovers (7) and header (2). That means your PI with just those mods are 53.9+7+2=62.9.
This is a two class jump from Touring 2 to GT4. Therefore, the intake, cat back exhaust and tie/stru bar mods cost 0 PIPs. In addition there are other free mods that you can use which are listed in sections 5.10 through 5.18.
Hope that clears things up.
Here's a link to the draft rule book as posted on the Solo Ontario web site.

If I've done my napkin calcs correct I am going to be running in SGT3 this year... that is unless I can get on a dyno, in which case I should be in GT1. (No dyno = 22 PIPs)
Nick, can we setup a small group session at DPS? I know there are a small handful that would like to do this.
Chris91GT
03-29-2003, 10:02 PM
I found a dyno session to get in on at DPS. Does someone need to witness the run, or do I just have to have all of the info that was listed elsewhere (ie, location, type of dyno, etc)?
nobody need witness the run, Chris. All we need is your gaurantee that the dyno run represents the state of tune you'll be using for Solo 1 competition and the dyno graph that Jeff at DPS will provide for you after you've done the pull. I know Jeff from DPS very well, so he's a good enough witness for me.

So, I guess strapping the family 94 LX auto 103hp Civic on the dyno would be unethical?
:D
yes, I'm thinking that might be defined as unethical, though the Civic would certainly handle better thru the corners. Maybe you guys should sell the Mustang since you apparently have access to a proper track vehicle after all! :P Go Honda Go!

HA! You said that to me too. You realize the only way you can "Show me your taillights" is when I overtake you and have to slow down to keep from passing you, right? Since you aren't allowed to pass me!!:p
If you see Civic (Dave's) headlights in your rearview you need to get out of the way, 'cause you're blocking the track!:D
Trash talking now is pretty funny!:)
I thought you had plans to get a bunch engine work? If you are aiming to use the dyno option, does that mean you changed your plans?

Ahhh... the joys of a good trashing. :D Perhaps I should write "MOVE OVER!" backwards on the hood so that you'll get the hint when I come barrelling up from behind to lap you. :p
I plan to make full use of the dyno option because it will keep me down one class in GT1 instead of SGT3 because of the mods.

I start with a '91 BMW 325 in GT4 at 61.4
Engine's stock.
I take 1 point for exhaust, 10 points for suspension, 1 point for losing the sunroof, 4 points for removing interior trim and seats, but gain back -4 points for rollcage and fire extinguisher, for a total of 12 points, making my tiotal 73.4, which puts me in GT2.
Am I right? BTW, I drove the car home in that ice storm yesterday on Toyo TS-1's. Can you say oversteer????
John
it looks like i have 29 points...so 54.6 as my base that goes to 83.6...which puts me into super grand touring 3
SGT3
who else is in that class?
ohhh i hope some V8's...please let there be some V8's in there.... ....pleeeeease

If i run the Civic i'm in GT1
If i run the Integra im in GT3.
John, your classification looks accurate to me. We'll double-check it with you at the Open House on sunday if you can make it out. Any takers on the CRX yet?
Cheers,

John! Glad to see you're back!
Adam... I'm hovering right around the SGT3/GT1 line. It all depends on the dyno. I keep rereading the rules trying to find out where I can pull out 0.8 PI to stay at the head of GT1!
Dave... how about adjusting the 5L base PI to 59.7?!!
JohnC
04-04-2003, 08:08 PM
CRX is sold to a young guy who just wants a fast car. Likely not in to Solo. Some bits may be available - 13 inch wheels with yok A0032's, braided steel brake lines, bushing set, spare front rotors, brake pads. etc. if there is any interest, I'll do a proper post.
John
Nice try, Chris...if you're going to run in GT1 you're going to have to eeeeeeeearn it :)
John, post all your used CRX stuff here and I'll re-post it on the HADA message board. I'm sure we've got a few guys who will want some if not all of it.

Chris, I think thay are 6 inch wheels - the rtires are 215/50/13's

O.K........
I have read this entire post and I am still not sure of my class. I have an '87 MR2 N/A, no mods yet, but it will have the air intake modified to fit a 6" cone K&N filter and a cat back Magnaflow exhaust.
So where does that put me??
When I look at the Vehicle Class sheet I see a '87 Fiero 4cyl in T5 at 33.8% and then I see a '89 MR in T2 at 53.2%
Where do I start to figure my Class??
Steve
(Silver Fox)
Steve, your MR2 has a starting PI of 53.2%, which puts it smack dab in the middle of Touring 2. What you then need to do is add up all the prep points or PIPs as we're now calling them and add this total to your base PI to determine what class you'll be competing in.
If you haven't touched the suspension, the air intake mod you've done costs 1 PIP and the cat-back exhaust costs another 1 PIP, which results in a total PI of 55.2%, which is just over the cut-off between Touring 2 and Touring 1, so you'd be in Touring 1.
If you've done any other mods, you'll have to add their PIP value onto your PI total to determine your class. Visit www.soloontario.com to download the new rulebook and download the registration forms including the Classification and PIP declaration forms that help you determine your class.
Hope this helps,
Dave
