View Full Version : electrical ...HELP!!!
hi guys,
i just picked up my car hoist, and noticed that the motor is a 575 volt motor...ahhhh
i will only have access to 110v or 220v...what do i need to convert this voltage to 575 volt?
is it a phase inverter that i need? if so where would i get one of these things?
HELP!!!!!

Adam,
You would have to buy a phase converter and a step up transformer. It will be cheaper to buy a new 110V or 230V single phase motor. Take your old motor into BDI Brampton (You live in Brampton, right?) and have them find you one that will fit. If you have a standard off the shelf motor it won't be hard to find a replacement.

If the motor is not too large (over about 5 HP) the cheapest route might be to simply replace it with a 220V single-phase motor with the same mounting style and power output. Motors are not very expensive, but power converters generally are.
If the motor is bigger than that, you are basically stuck with needing three-phase power, which will mean you need some kind of converter, either a "static" inverter type or a "rotary" motor-generator set, either of which are usable and available, but introduce extra cost and complication you probably don't need. These can be sourced from industrial electrical suppliers, or from places that sell machine tools, which often need three-phase power.
If by any chance your shop has a three-phase electrical service already (120/208 V rather than the normal 120/240) then you could just power the motor you have through a three-phase stepup transformer, which would be much cheaper than a convert
er.
A good industrial electrician should be able to help you out with making any of these kind of changes.
sounds like a new 220v single phase motor is the way to go...i think the current one is around 3hp or so...
