All Solo II Competitors

The official response about cracked windshields and other car defects:

The spirit of the rules is that cars should be able to meet the standards of safety as dictated by the government standards for operation of a vehicle on a public road. Having said that I realize that some cars, "trailer queens" or others would not meet all requirements BUT I think this is a satisfactory target to achieve.

So, in the case of the windshield, if the crack is deemed in contravention of what the Higway Traffic Act would allow then it should be fixed. If the ball joints would'nt pass a "normal" safety inspection the car shouldn't be allowed to compete.

I think we all can agree that obvious potentially unsafe cars should not be allowed to particpate in any CASC-OR sanctiioned event. I don't believe we should have to add all the verbiage to the rule set to disallow unsafe cars. I know this is open to interpretation and that can be a recipe for diaster but surely we all have a basic undestanding of what is safe and what is not safe.

Can't you fix that at work?
Don't let the rumour get around that you have a crack problem...

It still cost alot of money to buy the stupid thing. It kinda sucks when you think about it you have to pay alot of money for something that wont do anything for you. Well somebody can look at it at the open house and that will decide weather or not I race this season as a regional member or not.

Ryan, PITTL have the same rule as do all clubs that are casc affiliated (or they should for insurance issues).

Some clubs allow vehicles that do not follow the rules. At one unnamed event last year there was one of those pickup cars (a compact El camino) with no fenders or doors and an other unnamed event allowed a full sized min van (d'oh!)

Ryan;

I can understand and appreciate your dilemma. I recently had to replace the windshield of my pickup truck that was first cracked last summer on my way back from the CNAC in PEI.

Thi was the first time in owning vehicles for 38 years that I had to replace a windshield. What started as a large stone chip grew to a crack and slowly made it's way over towards the driver's side. when it reached the sweep of the driver's windshield wiper I knew I had to have it replaced. The thought of the window blowing into my lap at 100 kph did not compute very well.

On many newer cars (not sure about cavalier's) the windshield is a part of the roll over protection. This is why many windshields are now bonded into place with urethane. Don't compronise you own or passenger's personal safety, IF it's grown to a unsafe size - well you know the rest.

Depending on you insurance coverage you may find it can be done for a resonable price and shouldn't effect your insurance premiums. Although these days everything seems to impact insurance coverage.

Sorry to preach!

Last time I had Windshield work done it was covered under Comprehensive. I think it's basically something the insurance company wants to you do to fix your car so that it doesn't cost them more down the road. :)

Give 'em a ring. Though may be too long to take advantage now?! Might only be good for chips.

Plus, your deductible on comprehensive is probably $300. :mad:
