View Full Version : How these rules apply to me

Hi, I'm looking for some clarification on these rules, in relation to my application.
2003 Mazdasped Protegé
BSS, 2 prep points max
I've read through the rules, and this is what I think I can do while staying in BSS:
1) Upgrade to some wider tires (215 stock, move to 225), roll the fenders to accomodate these wider tires.
2) Install a free-er flowing filter in place of the factory air-box, such as a K&N Cone filter
3) Replace the factory exhaust system with a slightly larger exhaust
4) Install some guages (boost, A/F ratio)
5) Use my 2 prep points for a boost controller
That said, and assuming I am correct, does anybody want to buy some Potenza RE040 215/45ZR 17's? Or know where I can trade these for some Falken Azenis?
Thanks!
See you in the parking lot!

OK,
48 people have viewed this thread, and nobody can tell me if I'm right or wrong?

Here is my two cents, tires are a free mod or change, Cat backs are free as far as I know, Guages are free(doesn't hurt to know what your car is doing), and I don't know how many points the controller is worth so there you go.
Hey you don'tlive in East york do you? there is some guy around the corner with one of these hotrods actually there are as couple people on my block that have done there cars up.

Hey logan, the controller is 2 prep points so that takes care of the all the prep points you've got.And yes you can run any size tires you like and rolling/flattening the fender lip is allowed(I'd hate to take a bat to the new fenders though)the exhaust is free after the cat and the airbox can be replaced.
IMO I'd leave the factory tires and rims alone and run a spare set of rims and r-tires.You will get more bang for the buck from both sets, easily get 1-2 seasons of solo 2 from the r-tires.
Get a set of 15"s then you can use them for snows in the winter and r-tires in the summer, smaller and lighter for the r-tires too.

Don't bother trying to roll the fenders on your Protege!
There isn't enough lip there to roll. So you kind of have to pinch it and risk wrecking the paint, or cut it and weaken the whole quarter panel. It will only give you a couple extra mm of clearance anyway.
All you need are 17x7.5 wheels with a +48mm offset and you will be fine. There are a number of people in the states running 225/45 17 so you can check the protege boards about that.
Smaller wheels & tires will of course be better for accel, braking, etc. And cheaper. But harder to find good fitments and tires to match.
You might want to consider the 205/40/17 tire size for a gearing advantage. Or, I just found out today that Pirelli makes a 215/45/17 r-compound tire .. but it may be out of your budget. Ask Tireworks if you are interested.

How much torque do Protege's have? 17" rims?!?!? Skip the 17" rims and get some 14's or 15's.

160 lb-ft at the crank at 3500 rpm...
15's clear the calipers by about 2 mm.
I would like to stay with the factory 17's because that way I don't have to buy another set of wheels = less money.
I think I can work a deal somewhere to trade the potenza RE040's that came with this car for whatever tire I decide to get.
I think this whole arrangement would cost me very little.
Cheap racing is good racing.

Andrew intake mods upstream of the throttle body is an allowed mod in SS-no prep points.
Logan-were you running regional events this year?I read PMSC was considering keeping the 2% tire bonus for their club events,so running one set of tires makes a little more sense.
But no tire bonus for regional competition means no chance of running up front-which I'm OK with as you'll be running in my class and my poor ole corolla has way more than enough guys capable of smoking me this year.
Believe it or not it is cheaper in the long run to have a set of dedicated track tires-you'll like get at least 2 summers out of the factory tires if just used for street.Decent 17" street tires are way more money than 15" race tires.

I don't think we've decided what we are going to do yet...

Logan,
What size are your 15" steelies? i.e width and bolt pattern?
Would you be willing to part with them?

Keith,
I've only had the car about a month, and I bought the steelies and blizzaks then (blizzak purchase in march!!).
They are 15", 5 x 114.3, I'm not sure about offset etc, but they are just the standard deal from the Mazda stealership. They are not marked Mazda though.
I hadn't thought about parting with them...
Make me an offer and we'll see!
Edit: I assume you mean just the wheels, and not the tires.

Hey Logan,
Yes, I'm just interested in the rims. Hopefully they will fit an Accord.
Will u be at the PITL open house tomorrow by chance?

Nope, sorry.
Tomorrow is the Spring Run-Off Rally, hosted by PMSC just south of Rice Lake. I will be working checkpoints.

Bummer, I'm going to find out if they will fit on my Accord? Just to confirm, they are 4-bolt right?
Thanks.
Have a great time at the rally!
