How are modified cars classified.for example would a formula four be in the same class as a formula 1200.obviously that would not be fair but i am not sure how the modified class works.

Modified is modified ... there is no further division. Either car is based on street car, or it is modified.

What could be more grassroots than buying a truck load of steel tube and a bunch of junk yard parts and making your own car and racing it? That is grassroots at heart, modified is where the real grassroots guys are.

so now i need a welder
i need to know how to use a welder
i need a truck to carry the steel to make the car
i need a place to do all this work and not have the local bylaw enforcement get on my ass
i need a trailer to now haul my home made contraption to race tracks, wasting 6 times the fuel
i need a place to keep the trailer, and the truck
i would never own a truck
trailers are expensive
all the while i coul dhave bought a used mustang or miata for under 3 grand, drove it during the summer, raced in it, and sell it when winter comes.

Serge kinda has a point... or... a dozen points. I think getting into my daily driver and driving around cones is the epidomy of grassroots... not engineering and building a one-off custom car.

 What a bunch of lame excuses. Who doesn't have a welder these days?

if you have an over abundance of welders i will gladly take one off your hands.

My DAD has a welder! I could probably even BORROW it if I needed it. But THEN I'd need the 220 outlet, AND know how to use the darn thing!!
..... point being, I think there are lots of people who do NOT have welders ;).
Besides, race it on Sunday, drive it to work on Monday ... that's fun, right? Heck, you don't HAVE TO do ANYTHING to the car (even changing tires) if you don't want! ..... just run whatcha brung! :D

Sure. I was just yanking Serge's chain:rolleyes: That is by far the best way to get into the sport. Serge is right about all of the cons to the desgin it/build it/store it/trailer it/race it method. But there is one big pro: When you wreck it, you can still drive home and still get to work on Monday.:D

Then just eliminate a couple things from the Design, Build, Store, Trailer, Race it scenario ;). You can still Trailer and Race (trucks & trailers can be rented pretty cheap, actually, so you're saving the Design, Build, and Storage hassles! :D)

I have to admit my passion is with open wheel cars(formula cars)but it is more practical for me to get started in a civic and get some seat time and then mabey build a open wheel car.I dont think a f1200 would have a chance against the modified cars out there.Or mabey I am wrong.I have been doing metal fabrication for a living for the past 15 years and I only weld if I have to,it sucks and is very bad for your health.I look forward to getting out there next season and getting into the action.

I was going to get out this year with this car, but "the wheels fell off" my program. One thing after another broke.
Anyway the point is, you don't need to spend a ton of money to go open wheel. You don't need an expensive trailer. And you don't need an expensive car. I tow with a 1997 VW Golf. 80 mph down US Interstates no problem. Gas mileage is barely affected. Car and trailer together weigh 1400 lbs.
To all you guys and gals thinking of running in modifed,
Please come out! Kevin, Joe and I are really a friendly bunch and love to see other weird cars running on slicks! We're all friends in Mod due to the fact none of us can cheat because we have no rules. (Besides saftey rules of course.) We are anarchists at heart really. Please come and beat us. We will enjoy it. (no we are not masochists as well)
As a word of warning, best stay out of the all wheel drive thread. A bit nasty in there.

I'll be out next year.
I've had almost a month of no significant breakdowns  and in that time I've even managed an FTD at a WOSCA Solo 2. The mechanical gremlins are pretty much gone.
Got drivers suit etc last year.
Got new tires 2 weeks ago.
I'm ready to go. :D

I'm not planning on regional solo2 any longer so perhaps I'll be out for a couple of solosprints, pretty sure the corolla ends up in modified as well.
Be fun to try and catch the big boys, doubt it'll happen but ya don't know if you don't try right?.:)

Ron generally wins. Your F500 should be very competitive though, from what I've seen from SCCA events. Bring it out!

You probably won't end up in Mod unless you are running on full slicks Tom. The rule set is pretty good classing cars that were factory built. But you can always choose to run in mod if you want to.

Ron I think my head would hurt trying to add up all the prep points I'd take,ALL bodywork is now composite plus the usual suspension goodies. If the budget turbo build goes well I should have at least 250hp,not earth shattering but not bad in an under 1800lb pkg.

Maybe in the wrong thread, but CONGRATS AVI !!!
I think that your speed comes from the white paint,
but don't tell anyone (because white cars might be next
on the 'list' )...

Love the cars!
I had a 1972 Corvette LT1 waaaaay back in the day. That was just a gorgeous looking style Vette back then it still is.
The f500 might be competitive, but the driver, lacking any real experience on road courses, will probably not be. :o But that's OK I do this car stuff for fun not for the 10$ trophies. :D

Tom,
In your case it would be race weight / Dyno plot
Then suspension start point and mods to suspension...IIRC you have done some funky suspension mods so I can't comment on those points the CCC would determine that part.
so all the changes to the body / interior and to the motor can be calculated really easily.

Thanks Shane, might do some even funkier suspension design changes over the winter if things work out.:)
Also I kinda prefer the advantages of real slicks for my little car(light, wide and short)so if I come out I might just end up on some cheap used slicks and just have some fun so worring about classing isn't for me.
Besides if I was fast someone might bitch about the unfair advantages of having struts, rwd c/w stick axle and these huge oem 9" rotors.
bring it out next season...
I will be bringing out my 1.7litre Formula first nest year a few events as well in Mod.
