1) The weather can go from bright and sunny to pouring rain and thundering surprisingly fast.

2) However, you don't need rain to spin off the track.

3) Stacks of tires built and placed strategically to form a tire wall provide very effective cushioning, even when struck at high speeds, and offer a surprisingly "soft" landing.

4) If ever anyone has said that a Camaro can "fly", today I nearly proved it (for a moment, I could see nothing but the clouds, after launching off the cement curbing on the inside of Turn 8).

5) Locking up the rear wheels and getting wheel hop at approx. ~200 km/h is very f'n scary, and leads to very bad things.

6) Tow trucks are for wimps. Real cars can drive themselves off the track, even if it requires complete turns of the steering wheel L-R at random, just to keep the car going in a straight line! :D (due to some yet-to-be-determined damage to the front K-member, suspension, and suspect blown steering rack?).

7) When Dr. Dave says his tires are heat-cycled out, he probably means it. Although I don't think the tires are really to blame for anything in this instance, they sure did take a long time to get some heat into them and get sticky. However.....

8) ..... it appears I significantly improved my lap time over last year! If 300.3xx - 200 = 100.3xx seconds for Lap 1 of my session (Lap 2/3 being FWO), then that would be an ~8 second improvement over last year's 108.118!! :)

9) My passenger Glen is a brave passenger! He didn't scream like a girl, nor did he yell at me or freak out because of what happened! :D

10) In the spirit of Thanksgiving:
Thank goodness for the gravel "trap".
Thank goodness for tire walls.
Thank goodness the car rotated last second (I had the wheel cranked) so we side-swiped the wall, instead of going head-on (ouch?????).
Thank goodness the CDN$ is doing so well compared to the US$ right now, 'cause this repair job might get expensive!!! :(

Hope everyone else had a more successful weekend (despite the rain today). See you out there next year. Damn straight I'll be back!!!

Confirmed --- broken steering rack!

Instead of racing tomorrow, I guess I'll curl up on the couch with a tub of ice cream, watch a chick-flick and have a good cry!!! :o

..... nah! :p

What the hell ... $h!t happens ... emphasize the $$$ ... I really "hope" the body work part doesn't become too expensive. Otherwise, I think I may get away pretty lucky ... most of the mechanical stuff I can do myself, and yes, of course, no sense replacing parts with stock items  (they're to blame for this whole thing in the first place!!!)

Pete:

It's good to hear you are in good spirits and looking forward to a better
car and next year; which we all know comes too quickly. I got a little
track / seat time today in mama's Acura sedan and totally a street car.
Even got within 1 sec. of that Super Charged Dodge Magnum which ran
yesterday at 1:56 as compared to mama's sedan of 1:57.6 today. Very
slow but still somewhat enjoyable.

Hopefully you can locate the needed parts and start planning the repairs;
let me know if I can help out with my USA postal address for some of the
shipping or UPS depot is larger heavy parts. Niagara Falls, NY is only 1:30
hours for me and a trip I usually make once a month. I will need to make a
trip within the next three weeks to pick-up some parts for the Porsche.
Let me know how I can assist maybe with some of the body work and lets
talk. All the Best and keep looking up ! It could have been a lot worse.

What was Chris' final time? I only saw his time from the first session Saturday morning - a 1:35.xx - did the 'ol Stang have more in it?? How did everyone place in SGT3 anyways?

BTW, I just heard about Luca's mishap last night ..... very sorry to hear about that, dude. Sounds like the car is in very bad shape. But at least you were able to walk away (although I'm sure today you have a really, really sore neck?? ).

I guess to further add to the "WIL @ Mosport".....

..... Mosport is a very tough track. While it may be easy to get "comfortable" out there, it doesn't take much (just a small wrong move) and things go bad in a big hurry :o. I'm sure I'll be MORE intimidated out there the next time I go than the last couple times I've been out there. I guess it's just not a track to be under-estimated, and it demands respect.

... but I'm still p'd off at you, Turn 8!!!

Pete, glad to hear that you are OK. You now have the entire winter to decide how you want to improve upon your ride.

Chris' fastest time was a 95.681. He turned his fastest lap time on the second time out yesterday when the track finally dried up.

When we were putting the street tires back on after the event was over, we discovered that the front right sway bar end link nut was gone. As the car was lowered to the ground the bolt popped out. Thankfully it didn't happen on the track.

Mosport demands full respect and 100% focus at all times. It can eat you up in a hurry.

Does anyone know how Luca is? I know that when he left, his neck was still pretty sore. Thank goodness he wears a Hans device or his neck pain could have been much, much worse.

The same thing happened to me with my new big sway bars. Turned out that they use a smaller bolt than the hole in the sway bar, so Fourstar needed to insert a shim into the sway bar holes to keep the bolt from moving around and working itself lose.

Or upgrade the size of the bolt if the rest of your hardware permits. (Usually doesn't.)

Hmmm... thanks for the heads-up Stephen... there was a fair bit of play in the endlinks bolts/sway bar.

1) Although I changed some things on setup, the biggest change was Ubers. (Hoosier R6) I don't understand why we're not PIPping these things. I dropped my lap time 4 seconds since last year, and AT LEAST 2.5 seconds were due to the safe +15km/h apex speeds in 1, and 8 that these tires give. That's WITH the near ideal cool air with sun (track temp) that my car enjoyed last year versus the misty mess we had on Sunday this year.

I can lap in RA-1's at 1/8th of a tank but the increased lateral G's of the R6's give me fuel cut at the entrance to four with anything less than 1/2 a tank of gas. And even with the extra fuel weight, I was still at 96.4 with a small safety window. I was NOT on the ragged edge. (Medium size window in 2 and 4.)

2) Schools are great, but nothing pushes you like competition. Thanks Brad, for elevating my game this weekend. And congratulations for a well deserved 2nd in SGT2!

3) G2X Pro data is phonomenal if your opponents are kind enough to share their data as well. Thanks G!

4) I'm not showing up up at an event with anything less than a properly formed brake transfer layer anymore. Setting up on practice just doesn't give you 100% braking capability before competition rounds.

I wasn't there on Sunday, but from what I "heard" (someone who was there, feel free to correct/elaborate) the car got away from Luca somewhere in turn 2, and he went pretty much head first into the wall, left side of the track, just before turn 3? (that's roughly what I was told of the incident). Apparently where he hit, there is NO tire wall, and given a head-on impact, that would hurt :(.

Glad to hear he walked away un-scathed, other than the obvious (expected) neck pains, etc. Guess I won't be the only one with a "new/old car" next year??

Also, I'd just like to thank everyone for their concern and encouragement after my mishap on Saturday ... I appreciate the support . We all know we're taking a risk when we drive out onto the track, but it's one of those things, we all hope it doesn't happen at all, and none of us want to be "that guy" :o.

1) Jim Clark qualified for the 1967 debut F1 race at Mosport with a 1:22.400 in his Lotus 49... with no aero, no real tires, no roof, no roll bar, no real helmet, no real seatbelt, no safety systems, no trackside safety, no...

He did however have air UNDER all four tires over the crest approaching turn 8.

Oh, and the race was in the POURING rain.

!!!

Just imagine what a 2007 Ferrari or McLaren F1 chassis could do... 45s?

1) volunteers with no experience are lost and overwhelmed! I hope that I did not get in anyone's way on Saturday as I tried to help out but with my head on a swivel!!
2) looks are deceiving - what looks fast may not be and what looks pretty stock is in fact a rocket in the right hands.
3) Solo1 looks like an awesome sport and I can't wait to take part next year as a rookie!! :D

I was behind him, and I didn't see exactly what caused him to run off of turn 2 because I was just coming over the hill, but it looked like he may have touched the dirt on the track and he slid off of the right hand side. Then he drove down the hill on the grass and i'm pretty sure he saved himself from the concrete wall on that side. Its when the car came back on the track, it spun 180* (facing us) and slide onto the other side of the track and hit that wall. After he hit, the drivers door was facing the track and the front of the car was facing up the hill, and we all stopped right infront of him to make sure he was ok, and he opened the door and got out.

Just a note of caution here:

It very nice of you to stop to see if he is ok, but that is NOT a good thing to do. Other cars may be coming down 2, and do not expoect to a stopped car in the middle of the track, or even off it. Let the marshals do their job ... in a situation like this, we don't want to casue any more issues than the original incident!

There were two cars infront of me who stopped, so I was forced to as well. They were directly behind Luca, so they would have seen what initially caused him to run off of the right hand side. When I came over the hill at 2, he was already on the grass trying to keep control. I do however understand exactly what you're saying, especially because that is a pretty fast corner, and it's completely blind.

I would agree on this. This was my first event and when I came over 2 there were 3-4 cars stopped so I felt I need to as well even though the marshall out of 3 was waving green for us to move.

I think there might have been slight damage to the rear, mostly front damage. Good that he was OK, probably a little stiff on Monday.

1) When it rains at Mosport, it rains HARD!
2) Tires last longer in the wet. At least my about to be thorn away RA-1's did.
3) No matter how many tarps you have, your stuff will get wet.
4) My car gets floaty above 190kph. Anyone put a rear spoiler on a wagon?
5) Magnetic numbers left on a car overnight in torrential downpours will leave rust marks.
6) Seeing a line of mud across the bottom of turn 2 does not inspire confidence.
7) You tend to stop leaning on the trackside wall when a Cadillac goes sideways down the front straight.

Well, if this question were asked of my car, I'd rather pics NOT be posted, but maybe it's personal preference?? If anyone DID take pictures, I don't really care, but I'd prefer they didn't get posted publicly (I don't need my insurance co. catching wind of my "hobby" ;)).

Oh Adam, my simple little friend :)

I think your times improved largely because of your increasing familiarity with the track. I managed to improve my times by 2.5 seconds going form RA1's to Dunlop slicks which are a lot more sticky than Hoosiers. I'm sure I could have wrung out another .5-1 seconds if I'd had more time on them but you get the picture.

BTW it's not easy to improve by 4 seconds or 2.5 for that matter at Mosport... congrats!
