Hi all,

Was wondering if any of you have recently been hit with someone using your credit card via cloning? In the last month both my Visa and Mastercard have somehow been cloned and used to purchase high end items. What I can't figure out is how it was done? My visa I rarely use and hadn't used for a while. While my Mastercard I use frequently for gas and groceries and have only I've used online to renew my CASC license and BARC membership. All in all very frustrating, espicially given as its the holidays and I have yet to buy my X-mas gifts.

Cheers,

I've had it happen to me a few years back. I believe in my case the card was cloned when I went to the gas station attended to pay for my gas.

Also I was warned on not using my card at "we serve" gas stations"

It happened to me a couple of years back. I'm pretty sure that mine was cloned at a Shell station in Phoenix, AZ on a business trip. The CC scanner he used was "behind the counter" and I couldn't see it.

Ironically, I had to go in and have my credit card scanned inside because the Shell pumps down there require you to enter a ZIP code when you use your credit card to "Pay at the Pump". If they didn't have that feature, the cloning never would have happened.

That's why you see up here they tend to make the clerk key in the last four digits on the card as well so that they just can't reporgram the magnetic strip on their own credit card (for which they have photo ID) with your account #. I still think they should also use the CCV # on the back of the card instead or in addition to that system, but hey... what do I know?

At the "we serve" station here in town, I don't sit in the car. I pump my own gas and usually go in to pay when they run my credit card. They're used to me. :)

I had a visa with a low limit that I used for internet purchases. I received a notice in the mail that they would increase the limit to 1600 if i replied. I didn't reply and they did it anyway. A month later someone purchased some airline tickets in arizona for 1500 bucks, and they bought RealPlayer online (I would NEVER purchase RealPlayer!)

It took about a month to sort it out. I hope you've got room on your other credit card for your holiday needs.

Maybe one of these days Canada will enter the modern era and use cards with the PIN numbers. I assume these also have other protection features in them.

With both my credit cards getting hit within a week of each other, remaining christmas gifts will be purchased with cash. Doh!!

When my card was compromised, Mastercard send me a replacement within 48 hours.

Same here ... and THEY are the ones who called me! Usually they are pretty good at reversing the charges.

ps: Hanif: Where's my damn trophy??!?!?!? :D

My wife and a couple of people at her office got hit all w/in a month or two last year.

I stopped using cards at gas stations, restaurants and other dubious establishments many years ago and now it's got to the point that I pretty much use cash for everything.

My visa was duped a few years ago. Scotiabank caught on before I did and set me straight with only a minor inconvenience. I think it was scammed at a Montanas restaurant.

Are you married?
I hear that wives often have something to do with large purchases being made on credit cards.

I really wish they would finally go the way of the Europeans. They have CC's with the chip in them, and you don't sign the slip, you enter a 4 digit pin number instead. Much safer. I have the chip on my Royal Bank Visa, but they have yet to start the service.
