I have a question regarding roll-over protection installation. Keep in mind, the car in question will only be used for solosprint, not road racing.

The 2007 Rules specify the following table for material size (originally referenced from the 2005 SCCA Solo rulebook):

Vehicle Curb Weight Roll Bar Size Roll Bar Material
Under 2000 lbs - 1.500 x .120 Mild Steel
2001-3500 lbs - 1.750 x .120 Mild Steel
Over 3500 lbs - 2.000 x .120 Mild Steel

The 2008 SCCA Solo rulebook now reads:

The following minimum sizes are required required and are based upon the weight of the car without the driver.
a) Over 1500 lbs. -min. of 1-1/2" o.d. x .120" wall or 1-3/4" o.d. x .095" wall
b) Over 1000 lbs. -min. of 1-1/4" o.d. x .090" wall
c) Under 1000 lbs. -min. of 1" o.d. x .060" wall

Must I use 1.75x.120 as the 07 Solosprint rules state, or can I use 1.75x.095 as the SCCA Solo rules state?
Are the 2008 SCCA Solo rules a recognized standard as per Solosprint section 1.3.3?

1.3.3 Specific roll bar installations are subject to the approval of the Chief
Scrutineer. The Chief Scrutineer may approve roll bar installations that meet
other recognised standards.

Jon, you're gonna get this from everyone else so I'll say it first...

If you're only doing a hoop, make sure you use the tubing size that's also legal for road race because if you guys decide to finish the cage later to eventually run Sprints or CCTCC you'll kick yourself if you didn't.

Oh yeah, and I don't know who you're getting to do the cage, but call Ronnie O'Brien!

Good Luck!

Tod, don't worry the car I'm talking about will never be road raced.

...not to say that I won't enter a road race in 2008...

Slightly off topic, but not that far off:
Any thoughts on the negatives of MIG welding a cage / roll bar verses TIG, other than the obvious TIG welds "look" better?
Anyone know what the weight difference would be between the 2 sizes in question?

The answer to your question Jon, is the answer to this question: What rule set governs SoloSprint?

Downsides of MIG welding are look of weld..which really should be a non issue...

Alot of very large NASCAR race teams ONLY MIG weld thier cages since it is much faster than TIG welding..and when you have to weld 10's of feet of weld time counts..

I prefer to MIG weld..its fast..produces great welds...

however if you are welding anything other than mild steel ..I would opt for TIG

PS opt for the .125 though main hoop ..as its the most important part of the cage
