So this may be a bit of a n000b-ish :p question, but....

I noticed a lot of AutoX-er's using cordless impact wrenches to change tires before the event.

Can anyone recommend a brand/model number?

Just curious...

I recommend Snap-Ons 18v Impact gun, big bucks yes ($500-$600 range) but I have to say I hardly use an air gun anymore, Very strong I have snapped wheel studs with it. If you can afford one you will not be disappointed.

I bought a refurbished DeWalt one and it has lasted me over 2 years so far. New they are around $400 or so, and the rated torque is 300 ft/lbs.

Ironically, I say a crew guy using one on TV last night, when watching the Nascar coverage. He was using it to put wheels and tires on Jeff Gordon's car. :)

I typically break the bolts with a breaker bar then just use a cheap cordless drill to spin the bolts off and on. It adds an extra step but, hey its cheap.

The Canadian tire one is alright if you don't mind breaking the nuts before using it, it doesn't have enough juice to remove them on it's own. It's cheap when on sale, light, and comes with two batteries (which is great when you remember to charge them).

Would have bought the princess auto one, but they never had stock when I was ready to buy one, and still feel a more powerful unit would be best.

Having used the impact for the last two years I can't see going back without one, it's just so much more convenient.

I just got a rigid impact gun from home depot for work. It's only comes with one battery, but it's only $79.99. It's rated at 1300in/lbs so i think it should break the lugs no problem. I havn't had a chance to try it out yet.

I also have the canadian tire one and found it work well, but only while it had a full charge.(only rated 1010in/lbs)

I bought a cheap but powerful 210 ft-lbs 24 VOLT CORDLESS IMPACT WRENCH POWER GUN TOOL from Ebay last year. Even after paying a lot for shipping and duty it was still much cheaper then buying a powerful one in Canada.
There are tons of them on Ebay.

MY Canadian Tire model came with 2 batteries, lots of extra adapters and bits. The nice thing it is 1/2' drive, so you can use proper impact sockets with it. I found some of the cheaper models with Lithiam batteries come with1/4" insert bits. I paid $179 for mine a year amd a half ago, but have seen them down at $159. No trouble changing wheels on my Camaro 3 or 4 times a day without recharging. Just make sure to snug them up with a calibrated torque wrench.Good luck

Princess Auto 19.2V model. Still happy with it three years later. It's no longer available... they upgraded it to 24v.

Don't you guys get tired of having to replace wheel nuts due to all the damage inflicted by repeated pounding with torque guns or are all chevy nuts just that bad??

I am older than Pete but am still happy to break them loose by hand and just use a regular power screwdriver to spin them off.

I've never had a problem with my Honda lugs...

I am lazy so I use the gun to pound them off.

I had Pete look at my damaged nuts last summer.

I use whatever nuts Tire Rack ships with wheels they sell and only cross threaded one a few years ago in my haste to not finger thread twice around before running it down with the gun.

Yeah, I think that your nuts really are that bad. :-) I have never had any nuts need to be replaced because of the inpact gun use.

And Doug, your nuts are small too.:D

Thanks for the idears everyone.

Princess Auto has a 103 ft-lbs, 12V model with two batteries and a charger for $99....think I'll have a look at that. And add $39 for a set of impact sockets and I should be set.

I stopped using my corded 240 ft/lb impact gun on the lugs because it was damaging them.

Now I just use a breaker, cordless drill and torque wrench.
