John Powell

I am looking for information on a 1956 Lotus 6, chassis #144, (Serial #144RC85056), which a friend and I raced briefly in 1963. I have recently learned from someone in California who is compiling a Lotus 6 register, and who is looking for information on this car. His opinion is that it has some historical interest as it appears to be the third Lotus 6 sent to North America, and the first Lotus of any model to be imported into Canada. Below is a brief outline of the known history of this car:
- Tom Gilmour was the first owner, from 1955 to 1956 (or ‘58?), and it came with an MGTF 1500 engine and MGTC gearbox.
- The car was sold to Ollie (Oliver) Clubine in 1956 (or ‘58?).
- There is no ownership information between Ollie Clubine and Dave Hunt.
- Dave Hunt owned the car from (?) to 1963, and somewhere between Ollie Clubine and Dave the engine was changed to a 1098cc (?) Coventry Climax FWA. Also, Dave named the car “Sheila” after his wife, and this was painted on both sides at the front of the car.
- In the summer of 1963 the car was sold by Dave to John Powell (me, not Ted’s son) and Mike Pringle, and ran three events that year:
Sept. 28/29 - an SCCA Regional event at Waterford Hills, Mich., with me running in Novice (car #26) and Dave running the Regionals (car #126). No results available (I guess I lost ‘em).
Oct. 6 - an autocross (a real one, not parking lot racing) organized by the SCC-Toronto in the Don Valley. Results: John Powell, Lotus 6, 10th o/a, 4th i/c.
Oct 12/14 - the GVCC Indian Summer Trophy Races at Harewood Acres, Dave in the Regionals (car #95) and me in Novice (car # 195). No results again, and I don’t remember much about this race, but I know we were there as I have a steward’s signature on my ‘63 Race licence.
- In spring 1984 the car was sold by Mike Penny and myself due to lack of funds for racing. Mike handled the sale so I have no information on the date nor the buyer.
- The history of the car from 1984 to the present is unknown, but it is believed that it is somewhere in Ontario and is dis-assembled and may be for sale.
Any help in filling in the gaps would be greatly appreciated, and below are some photos I have of the car:
OK, the album link didn't work so I'll have to add the photos individually later.
Let's try this link to my Picassa album.
