So,
I have a box of parts, containing everything needed to assemble a miata rear differential. 3.636 gears, RX7 LSD, blah blah. Basically I am not comfortable assembling the pumpkin myself (setting gearlash, backlash, etc) but I am fully comfortable installing it into the carrier(and doing pretty much anything else to my car.)
I called around a few local transmission shops asking for quotes and I was simply shocked. 300-500$ for what is essentially 2 hours labour. I am not sure if I was confusing them, or what.
What gives?

Do a trial assembly (as per the factory shop manual) with the correct pinion torque setting and check the pattern on the gears with white grease and feel for backlash. You can take it in like that it and ask them to check it for you then you only pay for adjustment if needed.
You can always check with abrracing if you take it nice and clean to a dealer it should be under two hours of shop labour and they have any special tools and shims if needed.
If you go to a transmision shop try to find a shop that only does manual transmisions and diffs you will get a better deal. Most Auto transmisions shops are in the same league as roofers when it comes to estimates to work performed.

I didn't think to assemble it myself and check with them, that is a good idea.
Didn't think to ask the dealer either.
Thanks!
doing the same thing...installing a KAZZ 1.5 way into my LSD pumpkin...
