Anyone know an insurance company or broker that knows how to deal with kit cars? My Locost isn't far from being complete. The few insurance companies that I talked to wanted nothing to do with me.

Locost, cobras, etc are all on the road so someone must be insuring them.

A few years ago I had a Fiero-based Ferrari er -"replica" & I had no real problem getting it insured with my regular agent. In my case State Farm. :D Don't be surprised if they ask for an appraisal.

The other trick is getting it registered at MTO. My car had been mis-registered as a "rebuilt" car & I insisted that the seller get it properly registered as a kit car. One thing that worked in our favor was that it had once been registered in Quebec as a "Vehicule Artisinal" or something like that, so our documentation to support its being a kit car (articles from kit car magazines featuring Ferrari replicas) was easy to accept by MTO.

I'm up to speed on the MTO requirements and will be getting a VIN sometime this week. I haven't tried State Farm, but Allstate had no idea and RBC, well RBC was someone reading a script so they effectively said no because their script couldn't handle the question.

I'll try State Farm, but I suspect I might be facing the same issue.

State Farm has been an option for most of us Cobraphiles. Its insured to value (they'll likely need an appraisal). Your premium will be based on the stated value.

You may need to take your whole book of insurance to them in order to get your Locost covered. (similar to snowmobiles, ATV's and the like) This seems to be the trend among insurers these days.

Ah, the beauty of a kit car...no Drive Clean!
