View Full Version : impact of going to larger tires
hi guys,
so far i am running right now 225's up front and 245's in the rear.... however under steady state high speed cornering i can actually get the front to push thru the corners...unless i apply more throttle to correct it......
so...my question is....
should i just go with 245's all the way around? is bigger better? they fit the car and rims fine no rubbing or anything (i swapped the rears to the front to check)
will going from 225's to 245's make any difference...
(i would think the larger foot print would offer more grip)
i am just curious..since i see my enemy on the track with 315mm steam rollers..
?
With all that power on tap you should certainly be able to rotate the car regardless of front tire size, so I would say definitely go as big as you can since it should give you more grip in those tight corners up at the top of the DDT where I noticed you were really washing out the front tires a fair bit. Can you fit anything bigger than a 245 on the rear? If so, you're nutz not to go bigger back there while you're at it. Actually, if it was me I'd be flaring those fenders (free mod since you've moved up so many classes) so that I could fit 265's or 275's on the back and run 245's up front.
A nice big rear tire will help you get all that power to the ground!
Put it this way...275's on my Dad's Camaro made the car much faster than it was on 255's, both because of the increased lateral grip and the improved ability to put the rwhp to the ground. With the right wheel/tire combo your car will set FTD on a regular basis once you get the fueling sorted out.
hmmmm.....
ok will try 245's since the front 225's are almost worn down....plus then i can rotate all 4tires to reduce unever wear better...
they make fender kits for my car...i guess i "could" eventually go to 275's
i think for now 245's are reasonable..will see what that does..
with the kind of power you're making, 275's would make a significant difference IMO. Why don't you look at fabbing up your own fender flares up at ORF? I'd like to make a set of flares for my car eventually too, so this could be a fun project for us to work on. We could make them out of fiberglass and rivet them on the existing fenders, or make them out of sheet metal and weld them on, do a little body work, and repaint the fenders. ORF is made for this kind of thing! :)
yeah that might be neat to tray and do...its just sheet metal....thought it would be way easier for me to just order the fiberglass ones they already make...

This may not be entirely relevant but the JIC Sylvia D1 drift car runs 225/40-18 up front (18x9 +35 rims) and 265/35-18 at the rear (18x10 +32 rims).

Hrm, the universal part scares me but since they're for an Integra I'm sure they'd fit my car very easily. I won't need those unless I go turbo though :)
here are the flares they make for my car..though they want $350 us for them...

those look nice, Adam, but $350 USD is a bit ouchie ouch. Make your own and save $500! :) You know you want to...ORF needs some cool projects!
he he...we already have a project...one of the 240sx members is dropping a ford 302 in his 240sx...
