As a new marshalling candidate, I'm interested in the progression from QE on towards what is considered fully-qualified and beyond. It was mentioned briefly in my marshalling school session, but was not in the notes.

I've tried looking for this info on this web-site but haven't been able to find it.

Can someone point out the link or provide a copy of the text?

TIA

Don you can find all the information that you need in the race regulations Appendix "R"

http://www.casc.on.ca/documents/regulations/rregs08.pdf

It is on page 79 & 80

Just a point of clarification though. Corner Senior or Captain is a specific training that is not related to your grade of licence the same as the blue flag position. Your licence is issued by CASC and the grade of the licence is determined by the quantity of events and evaluations done by your fellow workers, then is determined by committee of the club that reviews your licence as to whether you are upgraded or require additional time and experience.

Senior or Captain training is provided to those that wish and have demonstrated management type skills that are necessary when running a station along with other workers on a crew. It is not uncommon that you make work as a senior or captain prior to receiving training, dependant upon the number of experienced people available at an event. This decision is wholly the responsibility of the event CCM and club that is providing the marshalling service at an event.

Good luck in your efforts to advance your licencing and I hope that you have as much fun at it as I did for the past 25 years.

Well;having paid (some of) my dues, lo & behold a shiny bright CASC-OR marshal license appeared in my mail. Yea!:cool:

But it doesn't say "QE" on it:eek:

It says - "Marshal C"

So I've looked at Section 8.1 of Appendix "R", of RACE REGULATIONS 2008 which covers Marshal license grades :confused: :confused:

There are Probationary licenses

There are Basic Licenses

There are Intermediate and Advanced licences.

But no "QE" license; and no "Marshal C" license

No Big Deal; but what is going on here?

Well Don it would appear that you have received a Basic licence. I am not sure of the reasoning or logic that was applied in this case, but the intent of the structure was that the QE card or log book would be used as a licence for QE's until they attained the necessary experience (minimum 10 events or days) and had written the test. Then they would be issued the Class C or Basic licence.

As for the difference in the grading names it refers back to old terms that were used when issuing drivers licences from CASC National, long before your time. Drivers licences still use the A B C designation as well.

In the case of Marshals

A = Advanced

B = Intermediate

C = Basic

I would suggest that you make sure to have your logbook with you so that where ever you are working they can see what experience you have and then be able to match you better with experienced personal. This will make your learning experience more beneficial for yourself and everyone else.

Good luck and I hope you get as much fun and enjoyment out of your Marshalling Days as I did.

Thanks for the info Rod! once again clearing a few things up for me.

BTW - the A - B - C as applied to (race?) drivers' licenses is not "before my time", but actually slightly (I guess) after my time.

When I was racing, I started with a "novice" license, then moved on to a "national" license after attending a drivers' school and running in some number of novice races and not blotting my copybook. As I recall, I was able to get a novice licence just by appplying, being a CASC-affiliate club member and having a valid provincial driver's license. I raced once at Mosport, THEN did drivers' school, then finished off the required number of race events without being a menace to myself or my fellow races.

A little harder now huh?...:D

Don
