Solo 1 Event 2
Shannonville Motorsport Park
Pro Track
Saturday May 24, 2003

Event 2 of the Action Front Data Recovery Labs Solo 1 Championship took place at Shannonville's Motorsport Park's Pro Track under a blanket of gray skies and non stop rain.

With registration complete and 34 competitors ready to try their luck in the rain, the morning lapping session started at 9 o'clock and gave the competitors a chance to try to find the rain line, if indeed there was one. It seemed like every part of the track was covered with water.

I don't think anyone minded driving in the rain. In fact, I think most people had fun sliding their cars around. If anything, it's the times between the on-track sessions where one is standing around that most people didn't like. Let's not forget those marshaling stints. Who says standing out in the middle of a track with water pouring on you isn't fun?

With morning lapping over, the timed competition started at 10:30 following the morning drivers' meeting. The event itself went fairly smoothly. For the very first time ever, we had 4 timed runs instead of the usual 3 on the Pro circuit. Yes, there were a couple of cars that pirouetted off the track. In particular, I remember a certain Mustang that got beached in the mud at the
left hander after the chicanes and a certain Honda that contacted the green wall outside of turn 1.

Spinouts, mud and the ever present rain notwithstanding, the event was fun. If nothing else, huddling under the bleachers in search of some cover brought competitors together for some bonding. What better then to laugh at the rain?

With the event wrapping up at 5 o'clock, Mother Nature decided that she needed to taunt us some more. The rain stopped and the sky cleared. Oh the torture! But at least Sonia had a fantastic BBQ prepared for us, with homemade salads and all.

Congratulations go out to Pole Position Award Winner for this event, Chris 'Krispy' Paczynski, and to Top Novice Award Winner, Brad Meise.

Solo 1 Event 3
Shannonville Motorsport Park
Fabi Track
Sunday May 25, 2003

Event 3 of the Action Front Data Recovery Labs Solo 1 Championship took place at Shannonville's Motorsport Park's Fabi Track under warm sunny skies (20-22 Degrees C).

Registration and Scrutineering were quickly completed, since many of the entrants were just getting dried off from Saturday's rain and didn't require scrutineering services. We had 42 competitors, with ten walk ins (not pre-registered).

Morning lapping session started at 8:55am just after the ambulace arrived to support the event with medical staff. At 9:30am one of the lapping competitors (Hanif Premji) broke his suspension, delaying proceedings until Del Bruce brought out his trailer with a winch, and many of the competitors helped drag the car off the track. We lost a total of one hour. A few more cars that hadn't lapped completed their lapping and the event was started at 10:45am.

Competition proceeded without incident until 1:30pm at which point we took a half hour lunch and lapping break. All competitors had completed two runs. About ten competitors took advantage of the lapping, but there wasn't a line of cars trying to get on the track like there usually is at the 9:00am lapping.

At completion of lapping, it took an extra 15 minutes to get the competition going again, but by 2:15pm, competition started and all competitors completed four runs precisely at 5:00pm. There were no incidents, except for the odd four wheels off by a few overly aggressive competitors. There was no damage to the competing cars or to Shannonville's Motorsport Park's property.

A good time was enjoyed by all competitors and I would like to thank all the series and HADA members who helped make this event a success (including the sun).
