View Full Version : Lap Timer Recommendation?

I'd like to buy a lap timer, something new or used in good condition. I don't really know whats available, but im more or less interested in something that accurately measures times and reports it back to the driver instantly via onboard display in the car.
I'd also like one that has the option of letting more than one person use it. So more than one driver can use the same timing sensor, once we all have the same reciever.
Does anyone have any recommendations? I don't know anything about these, anyone have any advice that they would like to share?
Thanks!

I haven't tried this myself, but the timing is right for the GB:

A very low budget method is a stop watch, accuracy should be within 0.2 seconds/ lap unless user gets distracted :p

I used to use my Palm Pilot and a free program called 'Racetime', had to push the button every time I crossed the start finish line, but showed the times and stored them in memory.
Bought the G2X GPS based data acquisition for this season, $800 but it is awsome. No beacon needed, uses the gps antenna on the roof to know where the start/finish line is, gives lap times on the display, has a built in accelerometer, also hooks to the tach, stores data to the flash card, you can download to your PC, draws a track map, shows sector times, theoretical fastest lap, etc, etc. very cool.

can these GPS timers work for solo II as well?
-guess you'd need a battery powered one (to mark the start and finish lines while doing a course walk)
-segment timing would be a fantastic feature as well
anyone??

just wondering....
-if you shut the vehicle off.. does it have memory to know where
the start/finish/segment sections are??

finboy,
It is supposed to remember the start/finish point after shutting down. It is even possible to define the s/f before you get to the track by using previous data, however, i've read some reviews where users have run in to problems with these two features.
As far as segment times, I don't believe it is possible to set those at the track (I may be wrong on this one though) but it is normal practice to evaluate segment times after downloading data from a session. If you want segment times, many of the non-gps based systems can use multiple beacons so you can see your segment times on the display while on course.
Using a gps system in autocross is also possible. If it is not practical to set the start and finish points during the event you can always set them 'virtually' in the software for review afterwards.

The Performance Box seems to be the best for instant feedback at an auto-x. Not only can it do auto-x run time but up to 6 segments within an auto-x and display them on the screen. This info can be viewed without the need to download to a computer.

Any other GPS-based timers to consider?
I have been fortunate to be able to borrow a friend's Performance Box for all my lapping days last year. Excellent device, price is right at $500, still trying to figure out the course mapping (I think the software needs upgrading).
Before I shell out for the PBox I am wondering if any others are on the market now.

There is also Harry's Lap Timer, now available for the iPhone. Dependent on GPS sampling rate of the iphone itself though.
