View Full Version : Screwed up my automatic - any ideas?

Okay, somehow I managed to screw with my automatic... The gear selector now picks the wrong gears. Instead of

PRND21

I now have

PN1D21

Note lack of the 'R'. When driving home, I stuck it in D and it worked normally, no grinding, no hard shifts, nothing. (I'm going to have to 'Fred Flinstone' it out of the driveway tomorrow though!) I checked the linkage this morning and it's fine, no bent cable guides or anything (at least not that I can see from the engine bay.)

What do you guys think?

Note that this thing has 160 000 miles (260 000 km) on it and has been driven hard, redlined, shifted manually, n-dropped (once or twice), left-foot-brake-launched, autocrossed on every two weeks... So, ya, this is probably caused by stress, strain, and the driver beating on it. It was ready to go but I need it for another few weeks. If only it had waited 'til I had a donor car for my manual swap... Now I have to fix it though.

Buy a new car or a manual tranny. It the meantime buy a bus pass.

Ya, I'm doing a manual swap as soon as I can find a donor... That's why I don't want to spend any money to fix this. A spit-and-bailing-twine jerry-rig that holds together for two weeks would be ideal.

That really sucks, Jay. I hope you find a donor soon!

(BTW - just yesterday, I was trying to explain to my kids that cars NEEEED a reverse gear. The younger one wasn't buying it. Maybe you'll have some more insight into which of us is more correct the next time I see you ;) )

Most motorcycles don't have one and the Mirage isn't much bigger than a bike...

In case anyone didn't notice at the WOSCA event, this car is now manual. Problem solved.

Automatics are for wussies. :P

I noticed. I also noticed you were missing your center console... a minor detail though ;)

Probably saved at least two pounds, haha!
Actually I was going to install it at the event but forgot to bring the box of screws. :P I didn't miss it.
