Tragic. Even an ex-Gilles Villeneuve car.

Man seeing the car after, still sitting on the track was just weird and the whole place was so quiet. I was watching from Moss and I swear it never really looked like he was pushing the car.
my sympathies to his family and friends.

A tragic loss - Dino Crescentini was a man who loved vintage racing & enjoyed talking to people about his car. We are deeply saddened by his passing. Our sympathies, prayers & thoughts go out to his family & friends.
Our thanks to the rescue crew & EMS people who tried so desperately to save his life.

After having had so much fun recently, Mr Crescentini's passing is a sad reminder of just how final the sport we love can be. May he rest in peace. :(

I was also at 5. It was pretty tough for me....sometimes you just know what has happened, without being told.
Many folks have been sharing their thoughts here: http://thegarageblog.com/garage/tragedy-mars-2008-varac-festival-at-mosport/
My heart goes out to Dino's family.

arrived at the track late.......saw the ambulance leaving and we all went silent in the car. Set up at corner five and watched the marshals close down the station to go for lunch. Have never felt such forboding at the track...everyone could sense what had happened even before the announcement...couldn't believe my ears when I heard people complaining that the day had been canceled......Bravo to Dino Crescentini for bringing back the speed and reminding us of Villeneuve in CanAm We celebrate his life and bravado for living what he loved and allowing us to be part of it thankyou to the organizers for stopping activities allowing us to reflect...Everyone's prayers are with Dino and his family and his friends

I also want to thank the marshalls & safety people that work all these events. As a driver I surely would not want to have been the one who had to respond to the crash and deal with what they had to. My thoughts are with you, I dont know how you do this week in and out knowing what you may have to deal with.

It's been a sad 24 hours that's for sure.
I'm trying to understand how this happened.
Does anyone know exactly where the car came to rest? One report said it happened at the "hump", another around turn 6.

Rick
It began just past the marshal stand at turn 6, ended just before the marshal stand at 7 and long before the hump.

Thanks T
I was wondering about air getting under the car. Look at the difference in the front wing angle from the era photo of that car and the setting from this past weekend. It appears Dino had it trimmed almost flat!

I doubt he would have been at full chat by turn 6, but still probably going fast enough to take off.
Thanks T

Durham Region Police might be interested, or might not. I doubt they have a lot of experience investigating racing fatalities or have any in-depth knowledge of issues specific to purpose-built race cars. http://www.drps.ca/netscape/whatsnew/whatsnew_view.asp?ID=13129
"The Durham Regional Police Collision Investigation Unit was called to the scene and the raceway was closed for several hours as evidence was gathered. The circumstances of the collision are still under investigation.
Investigators believe that weather conditions were favorable at the time of the collision. Police would like to speak to anyone who may have information or witnessed this incident.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call D/Cst. Tracy Gibbins of the Traffic Services Branch at 905-579-1520 (toll free 1-888-579-1520) ext. 5227."

For me at least I hope that when the investigation is over they let us know what they found. It will help give me closure and hopefully help all of us make our cars safer so we dont have a posts like these in our forums.

Some of those 'Flickr' shots show an unusual Upturn of the front splitter at speed as well, ...
My condolences to all concerned and I hope that the Varac community get some answers soon ...
