View Full Version : Suggestion for remaining Solosprint events...

Something that crossed my mind, and im sure a few others have thought of the same thing, is how the Mobil1 oil is given away during Solosprint events. Usually its given away with Geography or some form of trivia question, which seems rather irrelevant to the sport if anything.
Wouldn't it be more appropriate to award the oil to competitors for things like:
- Top Novice
- Fastest overall lap time
- Best Sportsmanship
- Crowd Pleaser
- An event volunteer perhaps
Or for things of that nature? At least that way its awarded for something event related, to people who deserve it. After being at Calabogie, I definitely think at least one bottle should be given away for best sportsmanship if anything... or the "Spirit of Solosprint"
Or maybe im way off and everyone actually enjoys math problems after an event... lol
Thoughts?

As long as the guy that spills oil on the track doesn't get any...
Great ideas Chris.

I have seen things like that done in the past ...
... remember the Taurus SHO at the rainy DDT event, May '07?? :D (he got a jug for "entertainer" of the day! :D)
I think it's somewhat the organizer(s)' discretion?
Good suggestion, Chris.
Now name the highest mountain in Africa for a free jug of oil. Hehe....

good idea,
or maybe an award to ...
- the Fastest Oldest Car of the Day (F.O.C.oTD) :D

What part of the car would you base the age on? :D ;)

Lets base it on the age of his tires :D

the body of course, only the body ...:D
everything else is wear items, stuff that needs replacement ... once in a while ... ;)

So Joe Smiley's '69 would take the oil whenever he shows up. There's also an '84 Fiero that's been out. Two cars from '85; how do you break a tie?
There's an '87 and a couple of '89's...
Jeez, there's a lot of old cars circulating on the track. It amazing we don't have more mechanicals on track than there are.
I like the idea of the crowd pleaser or a 'driver of the day', somebody that drove the wheels off of the car...not literally of course. Well, actually, that WOULD be worth winning the oil!:)

I think the Presswoods almost drove the wheels off their car once last year, hehehe literally :)

:o :D
I always liked the idea of completely random oil giveaways, with the inclusion of event volunteers.
There are quite a few people that come out week after week with a very small chance of winning their class, FTD, or top novice, etc. So to award free oil to the winning competitors just doesn't make sense.
Most entertaining / Most sportsmanlike / Biggest Off / etc. are good ideas, but I can see the award going to the same people over and over again. This concept is probably worth a shot though.

Good ideas Chris. I will come up with some unique categories before the next event. Winners probably won't work as they could be the same from event to event. I guess one of the categories would have to best horse at the event, hehe.
here's one:
Supplier of the best/most fuel for the Campfire ... (fuel = combustable material, not gas/oil, allthough oilpans are okay ...)
I hear painted plywood splitters give the fire a real nice colour ...

I agree with Andy. You want to give a chance to win something to the people who aren't going to win their class every event. We HAVEN'T included volunteers at all of the events, and that's one oppotunity we can improve on. Most sportsmanlike, volunteer, and completely random. (Which were what the trivia questions were supposed to be.)

haha all bets off for sure, you can just send the pallet of Mobil to my home address, I think I have this category covered.....
Shannonville 05' and 06'
Sanair '92,'93,'94, all the way through to '06 not much left there to burn after I went through the old grandstands.

Everyone always likes to be recognized for best score / FTD, etc., but do we ever recognize the slowest or lowest points of the day? ;)
Arguably the slower cars may benefit from some Mobil1 :D.
How about the mean time or average time of the day award ... the person in the middle of the class/pack, who would never otherwise be recognized ... "here's to being a prime example of the average competitor" ;).

Instead of singling (sp?) out the lower classes why not do the 'you got your ass whooped' award to the person who is the slowest in their class by the largest margin? :D

On an odd note, the healthcare industry no longer uses the term Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD). They now use the term Sexually Transmitted Infection. (STi)

It's a great idea. Best off, best burnout, best slide, best save, best comeback, best sportsman. At almost every event, usually something happens that deserves notice of some kind. Where these rewards come from is the question.

Now this worked well didn't it! Despite Chuck trying to get me in trouble with Ruth repeatedly :p
If we had to give out a sportsmanship award for the weekend, on the Saturday I would nominate Jeff from JRP. He was nice enough to take his own car out of the trailer, tow Marks car back from the track, and allowed Mark to drive his VW back.
On Sunday, Chris with the oldschool Mini was nice enough to bring home Wes' trailer, so Wes didn't get screwed by breaking down at the side of the road with a broken car and immobile trailer.
Overall it was a great weekend!

I really enjoyed the weekend also. Almost managed my first class win until that pesky Team Associates Honda pip'd me!
Hopefully nobody had to wait too long for registration as I tried to figure out what I was doing. Everybody was friendly when I saw them and nobody let the air out of my tires..:)
I think we need a new marshalling assignment on the PA system. A little play-by-play during the day would be great. Maybe the lap time calling guy can do double doodie...

I thought the oil giveaways were well done this time. 3 randoms and two "of the day". I thought I had one clinched with my record breaking number of off-track spin-outs. A little oil on my font tires would have helped me out, i think.

I have been called lots of things in the past, slow, lazy, grey, older than old but not irresistible and NEVER "bambi".
Unfortunately the first 4 adjectives would have been suitable this weekend. I think I am never going to carry passengers around MIR again, thereby killing my Kumhos more than I thought, leaving me on full tread depth RA-1s for competition purposes. Was I the only guy praying for rain ??

Yes a big thank you to Jeff that's what I love about solosprints...THE PEOPLE.
Also thanks to everyone else Krispy for letting me use the internet on his phone. Andrew W, Andy W and Renata for waiting for my friend to bring them the oil pan and oil and then bringing it up, and everyone else who helped out. Also big thanks to Adam H and David Mark for letting me co-drive their cars so that I wasn't just sitting around all weekend.
