View Full Version : Discounted Insurance Rates For Winter Tires At The Personal

Recently had occasion to talk to my insurance company, The Personal, about a change to my policy.

While on the call, they asked me if I had winter tires on all four wheels of my vehicle. My answer, of course, was yes - I've had winter tires on all four wheels for twenty years, and wouldn't drive a car in the winter without them.

They then said they were going to save me some money - apparently The Personal are the first insurance company to offer a discount for use of winter tires, starting in November of 2008.

So, if you're insured with The Personal, or thinking of changing insurance companies, you may want to talk with them and if you have winter tires on all four wheels of your car make sure you mention it.

Hmmm, might be changing. All insurance companies should do this. We had our family chirstmas on Sunday and I couldn't believe it. The only member of my family member that believed snow tires made a difference was the only other person who owned them. Even after I had to drive around on Friday running errands for aunts and uncles because their cars were stuck they still didn't see why they should bother with snow tires.

I'm with The Personal through my professional association.....but I don't have winter tires. So how much is the discount? 2-3%?

The posted link says 5%. For me, that's 90/yr... funny... if my snow tires last me 4 years, that company would basically be supplying my car with free winter tires for life.If your rates are >1800/yr, you get your free tires more often!

Convinced yet, fools?

That would save me about $30/yr....far from paying for the tires.

Not that far ... stupid cheap winters from Walmart are like $50 each. And they STILL work way better than no season tires.

you only pay 600/yr for a trans am? I have a perfect driving record, been driving for just shy of ten years and i'm paying 1800 for an econo car.

Trans Am's not insured because it's a straight track car.

I have a 2000 Saturn LS2(full coverage), and a 94 Old Cutlass(liability only). Coverage for my wife & I for both cars is just under $1,800/yr..my mistake...I thought it was $1200. And she has 1 minor convic and a collision on her record. My record is clean.

I've been driving for 21 years, and my wife has only had hers for about 6 years.

well there you go... 1800 * 0.05 = 90. That's one free winter tire per year :)

I noticed an add on www.peo.on.ca the professional engineers of ontario website that these guys also give discounts to ontario engineers... Methinks I need to make a phone call and get a quote...

The same is also true for TD Meloche-Monnex. They do not, however, have a snow tire discount as of yet.

They also don't give you a discount when you rear-end a GMC Acadia  :(

Yes, however when your professional/alumni association is no longer affiliated with them (after you just switched a year earlier to get the better rates) you magically become a worse driver and your rates go way up!!!

Really?!?! Hmmpf....makes you wonder what sort of arrangement the professional/alumni assoc. have with Meloche.

I, for one, have been less than impressed with Meloche's service over the last week-and-a-half (I'm also equally un-impressed with my own driving abilities, but that is another story:mad: )

To Mr. Ellswrth and Maddog: have either of you dealt with The Personal "post collision"? How were they in terms of service? Following up with you, etc?

Really? I've had nothing but good experience with Meloche regarding claims. Everything done promptly and without hassle. My rates never changed after my claims either.

I've never had an accident claim with them, but my theft and vadalism claim was handled w/o issue. In fact, the adjuster even met me at my office. I gave her a list of things stolen and she gave me a cheque on the spot!

If I saw substantial discounts for running winter tires, I'd consider switching over on my truck. I'd also like to see consideration given for advanced driver training ..... but as it stands, I hear it could be detrimental to mention "race" training to your insurance company?!

no one ever wants to file a claim, or enjoys the process

if spending a few more dollars on tires can lower your chance of filing a claim, why wouldn't you get dedicated snows?

eveyone on this forum, appreciates the performance factor with tires

winter tires are like R's for this fender bender season

Pete, 5% is pretty substantial since we've already figured that pays for your winters over their life... and that's with my rates... sumtin tells me you pay more than i do ;)

My liability deductible is $1000... so if I avoid one fender bender due to "conditions" (aka: some idiot losing control and hitting ME) then they're paid for. That includes seeing someone coming up behind you at a red light unable to stop, and being able to accelerate out of their way in time.

I wish this snow tire discount would be expanded - I called my State Farm agent and they have no plans to introduce this safety incentive.

I'm extremely confused.

Two years ago, the Personal went on the record stating they would immediately cancel one's policy if one used one's car at a CASC-OR event.

Has this changed?

Has this changed?Craig, you appear to have construed my comments as an endorsement when it was intended as sharing of information.

So, if you're insured with The Personal, or thinking of changing insurance companies, you may want to talk with them and if you have winter tires on all four wheels of your car make sure you mention it.

Some may find the information useful, while others may not have any interest in it.

Thanks for the clearing up my confusion, Scott. Much appreciated! You know how questionning we can be up in Ottawa :o

On my truck, it would save me $5.75 a month ... I just did the math. That's $69/yr. So I can buy a half a tire per year for my truck, maybe (I'd have to price out what a set of 265/70/17's would cost ;)).

But wait! .....
I wish this snow tire discount would be expanded - I called my State Farm agent and they have no plans to introduce this safety incentive.
Nevermind ... no discount for me :o.

If you put winter wheels on your car State Farm would probably call it a modification and cancel your insurance.:D

BTW, the Goodyear Fortera Tripletred is a good year-round truck tire that also happens to have the mountain/snowflake winter tire approval.

In a rather strange twist of fate, I just opened a letter from "The Personal".

Apparently, they are now offering "preferred rates and exceptional service..." to OSPE (Ontario Society of Professional Engineers) members.

Talk about a co-inky-dink....:p

I haven't looked into this at all, so please don't take this post as any sort of endorsement for their services
