Can anyone (HADA boys?) enlighten me regarding getting the alternator out from behind the engine? I have it unpluged, unbolted, belt off and free from the bracket, I can move it around freely but it does not seem to fit between the intake manifold and brake master cylinder to come out from the top nor does it fit between the chassis and the CV shaft to drop out the bottom. Do I have to remove the lower bracket and wheel well inner to bring it out through the wheel well, pull the engine (I hope I'm joking) or something else?

Thanks,

To the best of my recolection... you need to jack up the car on the appropiate side to get some clearance between the chassis and the axle/suspension
my car was a '90 std there fore less acessories so I don't know if that will make a difference

I feel your pain,I changed the alternater in my '87 civic in the driveway during a blizzard a few years ago-took me longer to figure out how the hell to get that sucker out than it did to get it ready to come out.
Good luck, its like figuring out a chinese puzzle.(sorry I can't offer the solution)

Jeff, like Shane said, jack up the drivers side and you should be able to drop it below. Getting the new one in may require an extra set of hands to line things up though.

Tom, I did my 87 Civic with the Integra engine a couple of years ago in similar circumstances, only there is a lot less room to work in my engine bay......

Thanks guys. It's out, along with half the drivers side front suspension but it's out. I had to disconnect the shock, trailing arm and swap bar to force the hub far enough forward to get the alternator between the chassis and CV shaft. Now to get a replacement and do the whole thing in reverse.

Thanks,

Yes, I can feel your pain, too. One race weekend, I had to do this 4 times, what with me putting in my non working spare, and then using the one out of my street car.

I found removing the brake M/C off the booster easy, too.
