Solo 1 Event 7
Toronto Motorsport Park
TMP Circuit
Saturday August 2nd, 2003
Saturday’s Action Front Data Recovery Labs Solo 1 Championship Series Event #7 was held at Toronto Motorsport Park. Since the TMP track manager was not prepared for our racing this weekend the HADA crew was sent into emergency mode to get everything setup. Nevertheless, the first car hit the track at 9:13am for open lapping and the event proceeded smoothly from there, other than a few on-track issues including a BMW spilling some coolant in corner one and a Corvette dropping an assortment of fluids through the chicane.
For Event #7 HADA implemented a new marshalling station at the end of the track exit lane, where each competitor's best time was written down on a 'Sticky Note' and handed out . The reactions to this new feature seemed very positive and I hope other clubs will continue its presence in Solo 1.
Thankfully the rain held off except for light showers during the morning timed runs which didn’t effect too many peoples lap times.
The Improved class was populated by 2 vettes and an exceptionally prepared “400hp” Mustang with their lap time range being .451 seconds. These cars all start in different root classes however their modifications have allowed their cars to converge and at this event all ran competitive lap times.
Another notable battle was between Andrew Wojteczko, last years Overall Rookie Champion, and this years rookie star Kenneth Lau. Here we have a turbocharged RWD rotary RX-7 and a FWD normally aspirated 2.0l RSX Type S doing battle.
The outcome was excellent with the drivers forcing each other to go faster with each heat. I know they both enjoyed the close competition. Good work guys!
The ongoing season battle in GT2 between Robert McAuley and Jeff Graves continued and that little Miata managed to win the day with an amazing one lap wonder time of 85.335. This time is almost a full second faster then Rob’s best time however when we take a closer inspection of the time sheet you can see that these two are really neck and neck. Jeff’s second best lap
time was actually 0.076 slower than Rob's best time in his 328is Bimmer. I want to know where Jeff pulled that one lap from!
My last note is the lack of propositioning, a good indication that the new car classification system is working well. The event was finished off with 30 minutes of open lapping which was a pleasant surprise (due in large part to some fantastic Clerking by Dave Barker and Caius Tenche) considering the delays we had during the event.
Once Jason Altimari and his black CRX with pumpkin rims was booted off the track the evening ending BBQ took place. I must thank Sonia Tanney and HADA’s first lady Debb for preparing an awesome meal.
Congratulations must go out to the Wheel & Tire Zone 'Pole Position' award winner, Caius Tenche, who posted the best back-up time of all 100 point class winners for the day. Congrats also go out to Kenneth Lau, who once again took home the Action Front Data Recovery Labs 'Top Novice' award for scoring the highest among all novices at the event.

Solo 1 Event 8
Toronto Motorsport Park
Club Circuit
Saturday August 3rd, 2003
Event 8 of the Action Front Data Recovery Labs Solo1 Championship took place on the 1.8km long Club circuit. It was decided to use this shorter layout because of local by-laws preventing us from starting before 12 noon.
It was a leisurely morning with competitors having lots of time to prepare their cars and visit with others. After the drivers meeting the track was opened up for about 45 minutes of lapping.
Competition got underway by 1:00pm, wiith it only taking about 1.5 hours to run through the two run groups. It was decided that we'd break for lunch and the track was opened up for lapping during the 45 minute break, with Jason Altimari once again proving he's the king of open lap time with his new r-compound tires and orange racing rims.
Competition resumed with the rain holding off until about the last 1/2 hour of timed runs, which made for some preety fancy steering inputs from some drivers. Everyone got in four timed runs and we were done by 5:00pm, at which point the track was again opened up for lapping until 6:00pm. And yes, Jason was out there again.
I also believe the handing out of timeslips with the drivers fast lap recorded as they pulled off track was a popular addition to the weekend.
I would like to thank the large number of HADA people, 19 in all believe, who came out to compete and help make the weekend run smoothly. Id'a also like to thank all the other key people who are always there to make sure things run as they should, including Timing guru Victor DelCol, Registrars Rob McAuley and Janice Andrews, and of course our fearless leader Christian Sorensen.
All in all the event ran smoothly with no incidents to report other than a few rain-induced spins by drivers who shall remain nameless (Dave Pratte). I look forward to competing in the next events, which will be held at the same track and hosted by TAC.
Congratulations must go out to our first double trophy winner, Kenneth Lau, who took home both the Wheel & Tire Zone 'Pole Position' award for highest overall score of the day and the Action Front Data Recovery Labs 'Top Novice' award for the highest score of any novice at the event. Awesome performance, Ken!
