... I don't want to hear any of you whining when you get sprinkled on during your run.

Wow. Did you wear snorkles and fins while driving? A wet suit, maybe? That's nuts.
I do remember one Solo1 weekend at SMP 4-5 years ago when it rained HARD and Brad Merkel got his brand new M Roadster stuck in a 3-foot deep puddle on the outside of Nelson T6. A couple of us went in there to help Brad out of the car and when he opened the door water poured in. LOL.
I assume SMP is basically built on swamp land, given it's amazing ability to not absorb rain water...

I didn't run in that one... PMSC and KWRC hosted the Shannonville Stages Rally this past weekend. The conditions would have made it worth the drive to Shannonville to spectate!

You must be a city lad. :p For us who live out on the concessions, we know the answer ... the frost ain't out of the ground yet! :( With the cold winter and not much snow cover, the frost is really deep this year, but hopefully the rain we're having will start to move it in a week or so.

I dunno.. the shannonville infield implies it's built on a huge rock.
But yeah I remember that event.. brutal the amount of rain draining off the track and into the pit and paddock area...
The MR2 was actually pretty good in that though, all that weight on the rear tires. But it was a bit of a maze out there trying to avoid all the on-track puddles. :p
I'm not so sure about your frost theory, John. It could certainly be a contributing factor, but even in the dead of summer a heavy rain at SMP leads to some serious flooding. There's something about the land at SMP that prevents it from draining. Could be it has a naturally high water table (ie. swampy) or it could be it's so rocky that the water can't drain very quickly (as Taylor suggests). Whatever the case may be, drainage is not SMP's strong suit, that's for sure.

I remember that weekend as well. I was at a lapping day on Nelson while solo1 was on Fabi. Insane amount of water.
I think anyone who's been off significantly at Shannonville can confirm that there isn't much soil under that track.

Yeah, it's on a rock outcropping, which is an issue, which means the water can run off the surface to some extent, but it mainly drains through fissures in to the surrounding soil, but if there's still frost in that soil, then the water has nowhere to go.
And wasn't that last flooded event back in 2002? I ran a few Solo I events that year due to a delay in getting my race medical, and I remember one weekend with flooding, and there were cones put out in some places to keep us from playing at Unlimited Hydroplane racing.

I think I was at that solo1 event, corner three on Fabi was about 6inchs deep the width of the track or more and about 5 car lengths long.

Yeah, that was the one. It was just passable on the far left side of the track, but you still had to go real slow or risk drowning your engine ... or worse. :o
BTW. I lived in East York many decades ago, at the top end of Westlake Ave.

The Event I'm recalling was on Nelson.
Sec... I can find it in the results...
(what am I talking about? This isn't IM) :p
I think this is Event 1 (5/11/03) in 2003 because Gord in his C5 Vette did a 68 and I did a 61 that day. :)
In fact, I was 8th Fastest that day (which just did not happen in my MR2) :)
---
The event you guys are talking about must be Event #3 of 2002 (6/15/02) because it says that was Fabi and there are 100+ second laps here. :)
Krispy in his CRX was beating Blair in his Z06. :)
Alec was FTD in his TypeR (they don't call him "Rainman" for nothing)
Yeah, the one I'm referring to was on Nelson. I also remember going to Walmart with Hanif on Saturday night of that weekend to buy more dry socks.
Boy, we sure have made a mess of this thread! LOL! Sorry Stephen...

I'm baffled as to why Hanif had to pick out your socks...
What, you don't get your b/f to pick out your socks for you?

At TMP in '07. My Dad didn't want to go any closer for fear of getting the 6 wheel drive stuck.

Holy CRAP!!!!! When was the Rally Day @ S-ville??!! That is unreal. I usually love driving in the rain, full tread RA1's and a little experience, but man that much rain? It would be liking running a snow machine over open water! Hold on and pray!!!!!:D
Excellent pictures, throughly enjoyed by Sam and I. Kudo's to the teams that spent the day in slop!
