Hi,

I have a volvo P1800 that is not vintage legal, but I'd like to go vintage racing without having to swap the motor and transmission. My motor has been bored and stroked to just under 2.4l (an increase of just under 20%) and my transmission is a T5, not the orignal 4 plus overdrive.

As it sits now, the car is legal for Targa Newfoundland (where we'll eventually use it again) and legal (although not logbooked) for performance rally in Canada.

My question is can I use period rally regulations to enter the car in G70. If not, does anyone know where I can find period regulations for other series so that I can enter the car under those regs.

I'm not trying to pull a fast one, but I'd like to take the car vintage racing, without making another huge investment in the drivetrain.

Thanks for the help

Go into the VARAC website (http://www.varac.ca) & get the contact information for Joe Lightfoot who is the VARAC eligibility chairman. Send him the details about your car & he will give you an answer. Because the rules are more relaxed in G70, your car probably qualifies there.

Or contact Jon Brett - I think he is "Timewarp9" on this board - who was one of the founders of G70. He will also be able to give you an idea if you qualify.

Gord,

Please complete a G70 eligibility form which is found on the VARAC website and fax it to me. If there are any questions about the form before you complete it please contact me at twr9@execulink.com.

I am one of the people who helped G70 get off the ground along with Diane Dale and other VARAC members. However the rules and ideas came from Brain Robinson and Jeff Bateman.

The idea behind G70 is to have the car prepared to a point in time set of rules, so using the 1980's CASC GT rules as an example, your P1800 could indeed have a T5 transmission as this was a commonly available transmission for the period and would have been a likely upgrade for a GT car.

What year is the P1800? If it's 68 or earlier you could try the the CASC/FIA displacement class rules which included an Improved Production class for each displacement class.

It's a 72 P1800 ES. Jon, I'll fill the form out and send it over. Thanks to all for the prompt answers and advice.

Hopefully the car will be legal with the minimum of fuss and we can get it out on the track.

Cheers

Gord
