Well the GoPro camera was back in action at the first HADA event of the season. I recorded five runs of myself. The last run was of interest and I have included some "bonus" footage at the end of the run to show what happens when you mount the camera too low and get a little too close to a cone.....

Awesome. Totally digging the end message showing up as the marshal walks the camera back.

I did most of the same mounting points as you. Any tips for editing?

iMovie '09! Best thing I ever did, computer wise, was get a MacBook Pro! Windows even runs better on a Mac....

Or you could tether the camera like the rule book requires. ;)

The HADA rulebook?

Hmmm, I had started a scathing response chewing you out for not realizing that sections 1 throught 3 of the regional rule book apply to ALL events sanctioned by CASC. But it seems the rule about cameras requiring tethers is in section 5. As this has a huge safety impact I'll have to make a suggestion for next year.

Aw Marsh! We were just starting to have fun with cameras. Is it really going to hurt anyone if a little cannon powershot hits em in the ankle?

Marsh - you are always welcome to buy a Honda or Acura, join HADA, volunteer to be solo2 director and suggest the changes :D :D

not sure of the larger implications, but a go-pro weighs next to nothing and would not hurt someone if it were to actually hit them.

I'm well aware of that fact. Can I chew you out for using x-drilled rotors in stock classes? ;)

BTW: Congrats on the new lot!

Does this mean an announcement regarding the regional on June 28th is forthcoming?

Bah, so many responses...

I have told provincial competitors in the past that I want to see tethers but I wasn't going to sweat go pros or lip stick cameras because they are light... so long as the mount is also light. I was just teasing Wes. (btw the rule book also mentions mounting them where they won't hit cones)

Actually as chief steward I would recommend that the rule simply be moved to section 3 of the rule book and then EVERY club in CASC would have to follow it or face the stewards collective wrath... such as it is.

Oh and I'd happily trade you. I'll run the HADA solo side and you can spend half your work week on the phone trying to convince up tight conservative Londoners to rent you their parking lots. Either clubs meetings are the same driving distance from my house and HADA events are actually closer.

Yes and no. We have a new club venue, but it's much too small for the provincial. An announcement for an alternate venue is pending shortly. I have to negotiate a few minor things with the club that is offering to share their lot.

That would be the club where I am a member of the executive hence why I was wondering. ;)

I've sent you an email.

First, the following comments are not meant to be anything other than comments....... This is not an attack on anyone, anything, any club or other entity (legal disclaimer as some around here will no doubt have some defensive comments...as always....)

A steward has absolutely no say in the correct or incorrect use of video cameras. The only time a steward would be involved in any discussion about video cameras is if a protest was launched by another competitor about the use of such device that is non conforming (and that would be a wennie protest that the protester should maybe look at beating a competitor by driving rather than protesting a non competition item) or if it had evidence to be used in the protest or appeal process.

The Autoslalom Director, on the other hand, could intervene as per the rule book.

That being said, I do not disagree with you in concept about the use of video cameras and secondary securing methods. In the case of the GoPro camera and hardware, it weighs less than a pound and with very little mass, it travels a very short distance after leaving the vehicle at most of the speeds we reach in Autoslalom.

The one great thing about the GoPro is that it can be mounted almost anywhere on a vehicle and if tethering was mandatory, it would make the use of it no different than hanging an IMAX camera off your car. Thus making the appeal of the camera and video footage of events much less. I think an IMAX camera would do a little more damage than a GoPro.....:)

You should read your GCR again.

The Stewards of the Event have power in accordance with the GCR to:
c) prohibit from competing any Driver who, or any Car which, they consider to be dangerous or is reported as such by the Clerk of the Course;

In short, if the steward doesn't think it's safe, then it doesn't occur. The stewards don't have to wait for the clerk, the organizer, the director or a protest in matters of safety. They simply say "stop".
This is why the chief steward does a course approval walk before the cones get chalked. Thus I've let it be known that as the chief steward of the provincial series I do not have a problem with Go-Pros. Obviously a protest on the issue would be another matter. But as you say, somebody would have to be on a serious mission to win scorn to make that protest.
