I'm looking to purchase an on-board lap timer.

Anyone have experience and or advise of what to buy or look for?

I'm not ready for a data aquisition system - just something to track, log and display laptimes.

I've velcroed a stop watch to the steering wheel before. I stopped doing it when I remembered what would happen if the airbag went off, though. :)

It worked really well.

Hey Nick,

The most common on-board lap time is the HotLap system which is available at most motorsport shops.

Check it out at the Longacre Racing page.

Whoa! I didn't know those were available, that's awesome! I'm going to get myself one of those as soon as possible... thanks for the link.

Kodiak Motorsports out in British Columbia has them for $248. Their prices are in U.S. despite being a Canadian shop, but I haven't seen a better price anywhere.

This is yet another link brought to you by the Caius Tenche Internet Search Service :)

Be warned that Kodiak likes to expidite things straight from Longacre, which will cost you a but load of duty at the boarder (since they use UPS). (I got stung for $29 on a $75 stop watch from Kodiak)

Personally I don't mind spending a tiny bit more to buy from a local dealer and I believe CSC carries these. Of course CSC is a Solo 1 sponsor so double bonus!

ALFANO data acquisition timers are sold initially for go- karters, but what they can do is very impressive! They can give three split times by picking up a signal from magnetic strips that are imbedded in the track's surface or a separate triggering device. Shannonville and I believe Mosport DDT have been so equipped. These units can track hours run for up to four engines and up to 100 laps. You can buy them from Birel USA in Woodbridge @ 905-264-6800; for about $425.00CDN . There is a web site @ AlfanoUSA or something like that. I am trying to justify one in our possession by using it in the son's go-kart and the Solo 1 machine. Budgets- bahh humbug!:D
