Well this Friday I was driving along and I shifted to 2nd and even though the clutch was all the way down there was a loud grinding noise and then a big "CHUNK!". Then immediately it started knocking. The knocking speed increases and decreases with the speed of the wheels not the RPMs. And comming off the highway last night I couldnt get the stick into 1st or 2nd when I tried to pull away from the stop light at the end of the offramp. I got going in third and once I was rolling I got 1st and 2nd back.

Now the car drives fine but its constantly knocking and I know that its going to get worse. Can anyone tell from what I have described if my transmission is totally toast or is it fixable?

If I have to get a new transmission then I will find one used and put it in myself. So I dont want to take it in and have to pay labour for someone to tell me that I have to swap it.

Thanks Simon.

Yeah, it either sounds like a dying tranny, or a clutch slave that's going. Known to happen with the miata's.... not sure about the P's...

Based on what you are saying, I assume you have broke a shifter fork and it is getting wedged in the gears, not allowing you to get it in gear sometimes.

This could be the source of the noise, the piece in up against some gears (like a hockey card in the spokes of you bicycle wheel).

I am becoming somewhat of an expert on this types of issues :(

Yeah I was thinking the shift fork too. I have been messing up my 1st gear downshifts and sticking it into 1st before the revs were matched.

Thanks

Simon.

try a wreckers for a used tranny...

'93-97 Probes, MX-6's and 626's, P5's and protege's all use the same engine...

I'm not 100% sure about tranny swapping issues... but check out the protege boards, probetalk.com and mx-6.com for specifics... I'm sure a mx6 tranny would be cheap...

Same engine? Well I found that the 1.5L (2nd gen) and 1.6L (3rd gen) proteges use the same tranny so there should be lots of junk yard options for next year. :) But Superdave found me a tranny in London with 21000km on it from the same model and year as my car.

Thanks again Dave for picking it up for me and hauling it over here its sweet!

oops... my bad... I assumed that you had the 2.0... but I KNOW that you're "displacementally challenged" :D ... sorry for the confusion.
