Since I typically do solo II, i'll post this here...

...so i had 11 days off over christmas/new years and decided to build a portable shed this year instead of leaving the car outside in the snow.

I used wolmanized 4"x4"x16' for the bottom rails, wolmanized 2"x4"x7 1/2" bottom cross supports, 2"x4"x5' for one side wall support and 2"x4"x6' for the taller wall. The roof supports are 2"x2"x7 3/4'. I bolted and lag bolted the larger supports and used deck screws for the top supports. Total foot print is 16'x7'4".

The white sheeting is boat shrink wrap- i used 33' @$2.50 per foot. Then wrapped the sheeting around the whole structure, then used a propane heat torch to seal the seams up. I left some air holes for flow thru the structure.

I'm in for about 10 hours of labour, and about $225 in materials. I figured i could build one for less that purchasing a garage in a box. In later years, it will fit perhaps an s2000.

Here's the final product. and yes, that's wes' old '95 civic i bought as a winter beater.

The old man (Caveman) built ours for about $150, but we recycled 2x4's from the basement we pulled out. So... we spent more in time pulling nails out of the 2x4's then caveman did building it. :D

Cool! Hope it deosn't get too windy! We have a garage in a box, got it on sale and the car that is dwelling in that would probably be better off outside! Currently it's held together with tarp tape. Thank god for Princess Auto!:D

the shelter material is made for a marine application. the local yacht club which shrink wraps boats and uses this stuff, sits right on the edge of lake huron where the winter winds really kick up. the frame itself has bottom cross members which i placed under the car itself so the car would have to move if the shelter has to be moved.

i actually sealed the shrink wrap around the whole structure- bottom, top, and sides- so wind can't get under the walls either. we'll see how it fares over the next 3-4 months.

WHen the wind gets going is it not noisy with the slapping of the material against the frame? I did something similar building a temperary room on my old apartment's balcony on the 18th floor so it was pretty windy up there and it ended up being pretty loud. I used heavy vapour barrier though with 2X4 structure. Damn I wish I had a driveway.

Nice job.

But if you wrap the bottom and top, why not just wrap the whole car without a shelter?

Nice job.

But if you wrap the bottom and top, why not just wrap the whole car without a shelter?

I thought about it and when i talked to the supplier he said i would need to use pool noodles between the car and plastic wrap to prevent the plastic from sitting directly on the painted metal of the car. If i didn't care about the paint's appearance, i would have gone that way.
