I would like to take this oppurtunity to thank Robb and Christian for the CASC-OR Outstanding Service As A Solo Official Award presented to me at the Solo Ontario Banquet on Saturday evening.

I truly appreciate the gesture. Like all of us involved in Solo in Ontario, I give my time and energy freely, and although public thanks are not needed, the acknowledgement was most appreciated. It was also reassuring to hear the response, during the presentation, from the community (thank you). There are truly a lot of good people involved in our sport.

The last two years have shown substantial growth in the Solo 2 community and hopefully I can continue to help and direct the growth of Solo 2 (and hopefully Solo 1 as well).

I was also glad to see Wendy acknowledged at the banquet as well. Your support is appreciated Wendy, and I hope you won't stray too far from Solo (even though Robb is moving up the racing food chain).

Thank you again.

Wes Tanney

Congratulations Wes. From what I observed in my first Solo 2 year you certainly put in more than your share of effort.

Thanks, see you at the CASC banquet.

Wes,

I didn't get a chance to congratulate you on Saturday night - but a very well deserved award.

All the best

Thanks everyone.

Somehow I think my wife should be getting some of the thanks here, since I rarely see her on weekends all summer long and she puts up with a lot of crap.

If I'm not Solo 2ing, Solo 1ing, going to meetings, sitting in front of a computer (working on results), I'm working on one of the poor abused Honda's in the driveway.

Thanks Sonia!!!!!

I'm glad that you are involved with the sport, Wes...

the other "directors" seem to think that solo 2 is simply a feeder-series for solo 1... and that solo 1 is just a feeder series for road-racing.

They even commented on it at the banquet... both of them... seperately! ...and tried to plug road-racing... AT THE SOLO BANQUET! I had to wonder if I was in the right place! I wanted to celebrate solo sports!

I think that the solo 2 director should BELIEVE / KNOW that solo 2 is it's own sport... requires it's own tremendous skill set, can and does stand on it's own as a legitimate form of motorsport.

Some people have DONE road racing... and PREFER solo'ing
There are advantages and disadvantages of both.

The inevitability of solo sports is not necessarily road racing.
I think that you, Wes... understand this.

Your comments are little harsh - but you do make a good point as noted above.

I happen to know that both Solo directors are fully aware of that and it's one of the reasons they put the time and effort into it.

I think you might have misunderstood Robbs comments. Robb is a huge proponent of Solo II and was merely explaining that the skills learned there have helped him with his road racing. I have discussed this in detail with him before, and no matter how much road racing Robb does, I know his heart is still with Solo II. I doubt you'll ever see him leave it to road race exclusively.

Perhaps the 2 above sentiments are true... But I know that it did catch me off-guard when BOTH mentioned that hopefully they would see more of "us" up in road racing...

I understand that Robb has spent MANY years in this awesome sport...

I just really was kinda surprised to hear it...
I guess they are just reslly pumped about road racing...

The other comment that didn't sit well with me... was that "if it wasn't for solo 1, solo 2 wouldn't exist"

Now technically... Autocross started first, I believe... but that's almost besides the point...

And PERHAPS the finances from solo 1 DO support solo 2... that I am unsure about...

I think Joe T. has a good attitude and some good points about solo 2.
It has more competitors, is more visible and is more grassroots...

Perhaps I'm just getting a little defensive about the sport that I love sooo much... and I don't want to offend anyone... Just trying to remind people of the strengths, benefits and uniqueness of solo 2.

...and I know that Wes is well aware of this... and IMHO... embodies it!

1Jay (*snort*): The current structure of Regional Solo 1 and Regional Solo 2 is such that without Solo 1, Regional Solo 2 wouldn't exist. So that is a very valid and real comment.

Now hopefully that changes because I would like Regional Solo 2 to be more it's own entity.

And I agree with Nick, I think the sentiments you heard are a little misunderstood. There is a racing foodchain, and it does start with amateur at the bottom. Of course it's not like Solo 1 or Solo 2 are simply tools to get to the top, however they can be for some. But generally people getting into the sport get their feet wet with the cheaper, slower and "safer" Solo 2, then when they feel confident there, they're ready to try the more expensive and faster Solo 1 on road courses, then if they have the cash and the skills (or desire) they want to go door-to-door.

Course you will always see guys like Robb in Solo 2 and guys like Christian (and sometimes Perry when he isn't running one of his 50+ races he did this year) running Solo 1.
