View Full Version : Centreforce Dual-Friction Clutches
Anyone running one of these? How well do they stand up? Any opinions are appreciated.
FYI this will be used with the Mad Mitsubishi Engine Swap, if I decide to do it. (200 BHP 4G63T into 1000 kg Mirage). I'm using a nonturbo Talon/Mirage flywheel and transmission with a turbo Talon engine.

I ran one in an 87 crx si,engine work done but not earth shattering power production.Worked very well, drove the car hard for 4 summers with 0 problems-never even had to adjust the cable once.
After that I used one in my corolla, since its not streeable I didn't really get to do a proper break-in but it still worked fine for a season of solo 2.At the first pro solo I did well enough to do well over a dozen elimination rounds nearly back to back and the clutch didn't like that much as by the end it was slipping badly.
On inspection the disc looked like brand new but the hub had blued from the heat.
I don't have any hesitation to recommend one after my experience's,up to you though.Oh BTW canspeed.com has some turbo talon engines and related parts on hand and were planning on a swap into a colt for stud tire ice race. These crazy guys even have a talon engine stuffed into a chevy beretta!.
Good luck on the swap, you do know you'll be running in mod class right?

I've had many people, inlcuding center-force dealers, tell me that center force is absolute crap, and should never come anywhere near a competition vehicle.
i have used 4 of them...they work great....i switched last year to a ACT..since the centerforce could not hold the power anymore...

Well, I sort of agree with Marsh.
I think they are a fine street clutch, I used them in my 90 and 91 CRX's.
But I found once I started really abusing it, it didn't hold up.
I had to make frequent adjustments... etc etc...
Now it's someone else's problem.

What sort of symptoms did you have, Logan?

It started to get "soft" and wasn't always the "same".
Sometimes it engaged harder, sometimes softer, I would adjust it to feel better, and it would be, then it would go the other way again. Repeat.

Did you ever have trouble getting the pedal to go all the way down?

I saw the Beretta thing, nuts... But then again why not?
Ya, I don't like being in mod class too much, but the stock engine is dying and I couldn't bring myself to put another 1500cc SOHC 92 HP wonder in, so there we are. Plus I got a great deal on the 4G63T.
What year Colt is Canspeed using?
Thanks for the feedback everyone else, I've heard a few negative comments about Centreforce on other forums too... I think I might just bite the bullet and shell out for an ACT (although the $500+ price tag I was quoted is about a quarter the cost of this whole project.)

Jay the canspeed guys have about a '90 colt(2 door hatch),I think he is going to sell the car as time constraints, lack of shop space etc are putting the colt off.If you know anyone the car is cheap,I didn't look close but it didn't look too bad.
Doug I think foxbat was asking what kind of symptoms you had with you clutch!
Like I said I drove my crx very hard with repeated dragrace type starts during koth at barrie speedway along with 4 summers of driving and I NEVER had the even adjust pedal play. The one in the corolla worked great with 0 break-in time untill I really abused it at the pro solo(even with the slipping clutch I had Tony covered all 3 runs to turn 1!)so depending on the usage I would still not hesitate to buy another one.

Thx for the input. I found a new CF DF kit for $200 US so I'm seeing it I can beat that for a comparable part...
