Has anyone tried this before?

Came across this thread on the Miata forums, and it really piqued my interest.

Of course, extra safety precautions should be taken, but I think it would be blast!

I would *LOVE* a night autox! Aside from any other factors, I am SO not a morning person :p

Ha! Do you know how many events I've missed because I couldn't haul my ass out of bed to get there on time??!! It's one of my favourite things about the WOSCA events - they start later (well, and the washrooms with running water).

Eeek - I can't imagine how jittery I'd been if I drank coffee brought for me by everyone! Hmmm.....I wonder if it would make me go faster ;)

It might not make you drive faster, but I'll bet you 'go' faster...and probably more often too :D

And this, yet again, is where the WOSCA autoxes are well equipped :)

I'd love to run some night events. Just wait 'till I have my full-sized roof bar with 1400W of lighting installed. :P

My Focus always looked better under the lights at car show, I would really like to give it a shot.

Hmmm..that confuses me. I was sure "my" car looked better with me in it, but it goes faster with Yvan in it. Explanation? ;)

I thought it was interesting that, in that thread to which eddie 82 linked, it was mentioned that it was preferable to run without headlights (at least - it doesn't mention crazy wild blinding lights, iirc). I could see that - headlights don't help you when you're looking out your side window to see where you're going, yk?

Off topic for Suzie's autox fantasy: Although I know it's impossible, I just keep thinking how cool it would be to have a nighttime autox where the (soft, of course) pylons glowed in the dark. /fantasy

Are there any clubs that would be willing/ able to host something like this?

Would nighttime autoxes be best suited to spring/ fall when it gets dark earlier? Although I'm a night person, I would imagine the possibility of people being pretty tired if an event didn't start until 9 or 10pm.

I did an evening autox with St. LAC this past summer... a Tuesday night in June, so the day was long.

It got rolling around 7 or 7:30 IIRC, and was finished by about maybe 9 ish? The sun had set by the end, but it wasn't really "dark" or anything. It was a lot of fun, and being in the evening, the temp had dropped off and it was very comfortable.

The one thing I did notice was some corners were difficult due to the sun being directly in the line of sight. It didn't help that I didn't have sunglasses.

A night autox wouldn't have to take place completely after dark. It could always start early evening (or dusk) and continue on to after dark.

Things that I can see being a problem could be noise (it seems to travel better at night, and there are probably by-laws), lot owners not wanting things happening after dark, and the specifics on event insurance.

It's a neat idea and I have proposed it before in our club, but no one really seemed interested.

What if we just started at 4am instead? :D

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't even get up at 7am to go autoxing, let alone 2 or 3am!!! And 4's a LITTLE bit late for me to stay up. Well, actually...maybe not.

Make it 1am and I'm there tho!

WOSCA was going to try this a couple of years ago when we couldn't get a Sunday lot. But we couldn't get an evening lot either. I'd still love to do it. I've always thought of it as a way to get a big lot. The big hang up is noise. It couldn't be even remotely close to a house.

Yea, noise would definitely have alot to do with where such an event could be held. Maybe one of the winter events could pull it off, seeing that it gets dark by 5pm?

I'd love to run one of these, sounds like so much fun!

Not a problem. In case you haven't noticed, I'm a big geek and I'm MUCH better suited for something that requires the use of technology than something that requires physical coordination - like running for and replacing pylons!
