This forum has been pretty boring for the most part this season so here's a couple pictures of what better be ready to run next month.

Since I'm working on 10 things at once I figured I'd better stick a "no oil reminder" on it-suck to blow it up without even moving it.
With all the cops, rcmp and g.i. joes running around my town right now I'd hate to try and start it and suffer a big backfire. At best I'd just have boot marks about my head and neck, worst is a few holes and a funeral.
Tashko I might run those tires just to give you hope.;)

i say, put oil in it then pull it into the driveway, warm it up, then wake the neighbours at 6 in the am...on a sunday.
how do they like them apples!
love to see it drive.

how much does it weight? it has a nice ventilation system ... you might get sand blasted though ..

06-24-2010, 01:50 PM
Ah, that's not what I was expecting you to do with the engine placement.
Are you running a dry sump or an accumulator? Because many bike engines are prone to oil starvation in lateral loads. With the engine mounted longitudinally like that acceleration and braking G's are essentially lateral loads to the bike engine. So be careful.

Beat pax in an A-mod car??,good one.:)
The design goals were for 900lbs ready to race,I weighed it a couple of weeks ago with some items not installed but the weight of each added in and with an allowance for fuel and some items not installed it totaled at 843lbs.I expect 860-870lbs will be a reasonable guess when ready.
I used a miata as a donor for the hubs, brakes and rear diff-the rest is one off so I hope not to crash it anytime soon.
No reverse, played around trying to use a starter to turn a ring gear mounted on the driveshaft but it was consumming too much time an was abandoned.Rules don't require reverse, only an onboard starter.
Marsh I did much research into the engine choice,I wanted to use the larger Hayabusa but they blow up right away unless either a drysump($$$$),or a custom billit oil pan and swival pickup is used($$$).The last choice is still nearly a grand and I wasn't digging the idea of the oil pump pickup swinging around with oil loads-what if it stuck??.
I went with the R1 engine since not only are they the most cost effective engine set they also have the least oiling troubles,I'm using an oil baffle plate as the oil control.Cost under $100 and well proven in DSR's that with areo will pull higher lateral loads than I expect for sure.
The engine makes 150hp stock, the plan is to run it for a year or 2 and then add some boost, only 6 psi nets well over 200hp so that should be enough.

06-25-2010, 04:29 PM
Oh Tom, you know that's never enough......but I hope you get out soon, someone has to beat Trung this year!

looks like it is all coming together tom. any ideas to when it will be ready?

Yep its coming together pretty well, had a 3 week delay trying to find part of the wiring harness I thought I already had so that sucked. Finally found 1 and I should have it next week so the wirng can hopefully be done next weekend.
I took the day off yesterday, didn't hurt my feelings much with the pita G8 detours, and spent it at the sheetmetal place and fabbed up the firewall to enclose the engine. Also cut all my body panels while there and spent today fitting the body, body parts all broken down again now and ready for paint-hopefully next weekend as well.
Been waiting for brake parts for a bit now but hopefully those arrive soon so the brake system can be plumbed along with the fuel system.Clutch and throttle cables need to be figured out and run, shouldn't be too bad for those.
The plan is to debut it at the pro solo on the 24th,trouble is even if everything goes well there will be 0 chance to try it out-not digging the chances of it being right out of the gate.Combined with no seat time and a bunch of dragrace starts at the 1st event for it and I see serious potencial for a complete failure.:o
Beat pax in an A-mod car??,good one.:)

Huh?
What does pax have to do with ftd,pax is only to make good drivers of slow cars feel better.
I just want to go as fast as I can and likely set ftd at nearly any event I attend.

My mistake. I thought you weren't running regionals due to pax.
max attack
06-27-2010, 07:44 PM
My views on pax is likely pretty clear to anyone paying attention, its not the only reason I don't run the regionals.A little too much travel time for me and how many a-mod cars are there to run agaisn't?not many. The last regional title I won(I say won as opposed to earned)was for c-mod,I don't remember how many others in the class but it was slim.I never even received the trophy as a matter of fact.
To build a proper A-mod car capable of paxing well would be easily 10's of thousands of dollars(10k for the areo pkg alone,Cheng's Vancouver Special is an easy 100k)and you have to listen to an annoying sled engine and its cvt-no thanks.
I think I'll be happy with my toy and the 5k total it cost to build.:)

My point is Tom, that if I had this car I'd be running it everywhere I could regardless of pax or whatever. Autox, Solosprint, Time Attack...

Steve,I AM running this car where ever I can-right now it doesn't run hence the reason it wasn't at the time attack last month.I was busting my ass to get it there but failed.
Not sure where you got this idea that I've spent 80% of my nights and weekends in the garage since christmas just to earn a $2 dash plaque by only running tlmc events.I've already earned dozens of them and guess what...I don't bother keeping them for anything.
Tlmc events are simply the easiest for me to get to and have some of the best courses on the best lot in the province-I'd be retarded not to go.;)

Thanks Ryan, the wheel was cheap but a little bigger than I wanted. The steering rack I'm using is super quick(1 turn lock to lock)so I was afraid a smaller wheel might be too hard to turn, seems plenty easy with this wheel.Of course thats just sitting on a dusty shop floor and not with warm race tires, suspect it'll be fine.

Probably someone with quick reflexes, that's intuitive, good with momentum, and used to agile cars, age shouldn't be a factor, but I'm not available and Cobra drivers have no clue so that rules them out. Bwaahhahahahah :p

Well its taken alot longer than I expected to get to this point but the car now has brakes, all the driveline bits are painted and reinstalled for the last time, fluilds in place and it's corner weighted and ready to go.Just need to centerline the chassis and set toe at both ends,camber/castor is done.
The wiring is done but has some issues, just sorting that out hopefully on saturday-lots of time left as the event I want to be at with it is on sunday!!
I must have gotten something right because it was the easiest corner weight I've ever done(not that I'm an expert by any stretch),after it was sitting on the leveled scale pads I set ride height to level the lower control arms with my weight in lead in the seat. When I checked it was sitting at 49.4% right side weight and the crossweight was 49.6%,about a quarter turn of 2 opposing spring seats and it sits at 50.0%.It's 57.7% rear heavy, hope thats about right because changing it will be really hard.
Less than 15 minutes while quietly sipping a cold one, couldn't have been any easier.:)

Let me say this,I'm confident in my driving BUT I'm also smart enough to not be a cocky bugger so there's no way I'm going to predict who's going to ftd. However after that disclaimer and comparing your times in your hot rod civic on race tires agaisn't mine in a stock miata on street tires at the last event I'd say your in for a whoppin'!:D:D
Now if I can figure out how to drive this thing I might be able to back the above comment up,if the little launch I did in the driveway is an accurate indication this thing is going to be a handfull to react fast enough.
Oh and I hope your doing the next course layout, last one wasn't as fun as it should be.

I don't have ninja status on these forums...I'm not sure who edited the title, but I can guess.
As for the course design, yes...I will be doing it.
Out of curiosity Tom, what's the power to weight ratio on the "car" you have there? I'm pretty sure you'll beat me...even if you just cruised around the course. Comparing my car to your "car" is about the same as comparing a stock car to my car. All three are on totally different levels.
See you on the 19th!

Oh I understand the differences, thats why I went and built what I did instead of version 4 or whatever the corolla was going to be.:)
Without driver(which is the way everyone seems to compare)I'm at 6.1 lbs per hp(5.8 with the proper wheel/tire combo and approx 4 lbs per when I add the turbo;)),I'm guessing your right around 10lbs per hp(the corolla was about 7.8 for a comparision). It's hard to use power/weight imo when comparing a bike engine output to a car engine just due to the area under the curve. My engine makes approx 150hp at 10,800 with only 89 ft lbs at around 10,000.
With my very short gearing(calculated at 115 mph in 6th at 11,800rpm)and 6 close spaced gears the lack of tq shouldn't be a problem. With my gear ratio's I should come pretty close to having the right gear for each section of nearly every course I come across, that doesn't happen in a car very often.;)

1st drive now complete, wasn't without some issues as expected.A "t" fitting for the coolant started to leak(on the header, seen in video at the end of the staight)and I have a problem with the front lower control bending.
The video is only my 3rd lap,I adjusted camber after it for a small front push and then went back out and then had the suspension arm problem and packed up.
All things considered I think it shows some very good promise,I need more seat time without a doubt.
