View Full Version : HOV Lane Enforcement ?

I've been travelling the 404/DVP recently and get really steamed when I keep seeing car after car with driver alone (no passenger) - whipping by me in the High Occupancy Vehicle lanes.

I occasionally give them the finger, but haven't seen anyone pulled over and getting tickets. Are police enforcing this law? I know they do a blitz once a year or so - but on a regular basis - are these guys laughing at me (and this silly law) and getting away with it?

Nick,
"The Finger"? Now really, aren't you too laid back to get that emotional about some asswad who wants to thinks he's shit and drive in th HOV lane.

Life's too short. Let it go. Be at one with your universe and chill out.

Now repeat after me "Wooosah", "Wooosah", "Wooosah"

Now don't you feel much better.

By the way, one of the things that pisses me off is these testosterone pilots, whizzing around in their really expensive sports Ferrari's, Audi', Porsches and Corvettes weaving in and out of traffic like they're Mario Andretti.
Hope this doesn't hit a nerve.

I drive from 7 to 401 down the HOV almost every day with my carpool and my experience is the opposite. The obedience is pretty amazing to me. The normal lanes are PACKED, parking lot, and no one's risking cheating the HOV. They've backed off on enforcement but it used to be pretty brutal. I still see someone pulled over pretty much every week in the tunnel to 401W - it's a nice place to catch people, can't BS your way there that you were just passing someone or whatever.

Maybe they have a child in the car that you can't see? *shrug*

Either way, life's too short to worry about all the idiots out there.

Usually I just strap my "Real Doll" in the front seat with sunglasses on.

You can borrow her if you want Nick.

On a related note has anyone heard of people being ticketed for the cell phone law? I see a lot of people who still use their cell phone while driving but haven't heard of anyone actually getting a ticket.

Why would you want to use the HOV lane?Everytime I use them, there is a Prius type vehicle ahead with a large family doing 10 under the limit and the non HOV lanes are blasting by us:rolleyes:

I see more people now using cell phones in the car than before the ineffective law!

I heard on the radio that London was getting the heaviest enforcement of that law. Now if only the cop who's third of 5 to turn left on a red would turn on his lights now and then...

I have noticed a marked reduction in cell phone use in this area. But you can always spot them because they are leaning way over to the right as though that makes people not notice the cell phone.

HOV lane is only good for getting on the 401 west quickly

otherwise its a complete waste of space

they should have narrowed the other lanes by 5-10 inches, got rid of that silly thick divider, and made the highway 7 lanes

made the offramp to the 401 2-3 lanes wide, and the crossover to the DVP 3 lanes wide with the DVP collector 6 lanes slowly getting back to 3 around york mills.

but not, they are idiots, just spend money rebuilding the same old congested crap

lets have a 5 lane highway turn into 2 lanes right at the most interesting point.. and have sheppard feed into it as well.. okay! brilliant...

as for the original question, i have seen very little police enforcement anywhere in the city at various points during the day.

I saw a cop driving and talking on her cell phone. But I suppose it's less dangerous or more necessary for them than us.

I enter the 404 southbound at Bloomington - and by the time we hit about Finch - the regular lanes are stop and go (almost regardless these day of what time it is). Even with the "Prius type vehicles" drving 10 under the limit - the HOV lanes zip right past the traffic - until you hit the merge lanes - south of 401, near York Mills.

I estimate that using the multi-passenger lane saves somewhere from 10 to 15 minutes of a 45 minute run downtown.

Emergency Services are exempt. ;)

Exempt from what, driving safely? Just imagine:

"Ambulance driver in hospital after collision while talking on cell phone."

Explain that one.

Just sayin' though. :D

Nick, if you see an empty "First Student Canada" school bus in the HOV lane please don't give me the finger. However I usually won't use the HOV as the busses are governed and I don't like holding up the jerks, by themselves in their car talking on a handheld device that just NEED to get past the bus !!!! LOL

If I had a dollar for every car I see in the carpool lane driver alone I could buy a set of race tires! I drive daily from Davis to Sheppard and it's remarkable the nerve of some people. What they need is enforcement, and a REAL fine to help deter the idiots, in California the fine is like $500 if you're caught solo in the lane or in a vehicle that is not a hybrid...

That's the point I was trying to make. I resent when people who obey the law are disadvantraged to those who flaunt it. If the law is not going to be enforced - then drop it and let all of us drive in all of the lanes.
