I received this from another message forum and, personally, think that this is a good idea for this message forum as well.......

As mentioned previously, on the ???? (names changed to protect the innocent) Discussion Forum we have a policy regarding registered Usernames. We ask that all members use their full first & last names instead of a nickname. This will allow everyone to recognize each other by name, and also make everyone more accountable for the content of their posts. If you are adamant about keeping your nickname, simply add it to your signature as many others have done.
Please take a moment to change your Username to your full first & last names. This can be accomplished by clicking on the Profile link at the top of this page. If you have any difficulties making this change, please feel free to ask for assistance.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

I think in a community as small as ours that would be a good idea.

I say we just include our names in the tiny signature that appears below our posts.
They do this on the Canadian DSM board. The only thing I can say about it is I'm indifferent. That said,
(a) JAYh comes from my first name and the first initial of my last name (in case anyone hadn't figured that bit out) (the only reason I added the 'h' is 'coz JAY was already taken.)
(b) my FULL (first and last) name is all of fifteen letters long and a pain in the wrong end to type in every time I want to post. Since most people on here already use their names or some variation thereof, I would argue that requiring it is unnecessary.

Gee, I wonder what board that came out of?
LOL ;)

I always KNEW I was a trendsetter. That other Dave is just too presumptious (sp?) to have kept the single "Dave" for himself. Sorta like Madonna,( better name though).

Well, I've been on boards where people have received irl stalking and harassment because they gave out too much info online (in one case of which I'm thinking, a woman gave out her first name, city, and name of a chain store in which she'd worked and was tracked down from that). I think it's a good idea to be identifiable to others on here who would have a reason to know you irl, but it's a totally public board and I don't want share my full name on public boards. To me, that's a safety issue.

I agree 100% with you, 261.
I thought we had moderators to take care of members who abuse their privileges. And I thought all members had the ability to report abusive posts.
I think most of us already know each other on here anyway.
The real threat may be from the guests who scope these boards totally incognito.

That should be *Agent* 261, so I can maintain my mysterious aura ;)

Ya, there are scary people lurking around the board sometimes... Like that insurance agent guy a while ago.

I agree with JAYh. The individual should have free choice in this matter. This is a public board that can be viewed by anyone. A person should be able to maintain what ever level on anonymity they feel comfortable with.

ARMS (Atlantic Regional Motorsport) does this. I personally think it's pretty anal and quite frankly considering the "insurance" scare, would be a sucky thing. If it were a private board, or if posts were out of hand, I'd agree, since neither really apply, I'd personally rather it left be.

I personally think it should be left up to the individual to choose their messageboard name. There are always going to be people who do not want to disclose too much information on a publically viewable messageboard, though I don't have a problem with people knowing who I am (which is why my full name appears in my sig)

Tony George may be a bit of an idiot, but I don't think you should be blaming the IRL for any stalking...

The insurance issue would scare me. It would make it really easy for companies to scrap your plan if someone from the industry was taking notes. There are also serious privacy and personal safety issues that can crop up. I have dealt with this on a forum that I moderate and it is not pretty. I recently had a case where a member's employer was contacted by another user as an effort to settle an argument. We banned the user immediately but damage could have been done. The employer was more confused than anything else and let it slide.
I think it is best for people to decide what level of anonymity they feel comfortable with. In the end, most of us know each other or some other members quite well and have much opportunity to interact on a personal basis during the season.
