I was shocked when I found out just recently they were in the game. So now I'm on a mission to finish GT3 before GT4 comes out (in April?)
Is GT4 finally going to allow over-the-net playing?

You should see me at work, it is like an autocross every time I have to take a car to the roof or back down. There is a nice hairpin that goes up stairs and those Yukons are bastards to make the corner.

It's funny. I don't think the HRC school did anything for my Solo-2, but it did wonders for my Gran Tourismo and mall walking skills.

Do a few laps of Laguna Seca in it the go back and drive something like the stock Miata...lol...what a difference.
Better yet, try this. Try two player on arcade mode, go to the super speedway. Let a buddy drive the F1 car (or you can if you want) other player drives a stock Mini..see how many times you can lap the mini in a 5 lap race...lol...if you can keep a straight face....and god help you if you make contact at any time...F1 car at 200mph vs Mini at 70mph...

In the old game "DRIVER" for the pc there is a game where knock over as many cones as possible. NFS Porsche unleashed has something similar.

:D I remember pushing the Mini up to 120 mph with the GTC RX-7 from GT2. Ah, there's just no limit to the crazy fun you can have with that game.

sorry for bringing up an old thread........ but I love this game!
It is sooo accurate. So far I have been lucky enough to drive seven cars in real life that are in the game, and ALL are accurate. 2nd Gen RX7, Corvette C5, Honda S2000, and even the little Mk1 MR2! I replicated the set ups on the game to how I thought I drove them in real life, and they all acted so well. In the game, the MR2 was SUPER twitchy under braking, the RX7 responded well to harsh turn in to make it "take a set" (with a softer suspension set-up), the S2000 required smooth turn in but could then be powered through the corner REALLY hard, and the Corvette seemed to show all the same good handling characteristics, such as good turn-in and progressive, controllable drifting.
With the F1 car, I found that when I set up the car, it had great turn-in, was good through the corner, but had a bit too much oversteer in slower corners. Not wanting to upset the aero balance, or hurt the turn-in and mid-corner handling, I thought I should try softening the rear spring rate.... it worked! the rear squatted, gave more weight-distribution to the rear, and rocketed out of the corners. I was amazed how well each little set-up change can affect the car in all the RIGHT ways.
I have played this game WAY too much. :D I have even got to the point where I am using the flaws in the game to my advantage. I found that the kerbing has a higher level of grip, so I can enter a corner a good 10 mph faster, and just hope I hit the apex **just right**. If not, it's wall-time baby. ;)
I can't wait for GT4 to come out. I saw a screen shot of a Karmen-Ghia!! The graphics and physics should be absolutely incredible. I just hope they can have some LMP's in there too... Imagine giving the Audi R8 a go at Laguna?? Mmmm....
Oh yeah, and I *always* try to take a racing line through the hallways at school, home, etc, etc... Sometimes I even make tiny movements with my hands to simulate downshifting. When sitting down anywhere, I find myself heel-and-toeing the seat in front of me, or the wall, etc... I'm obsessed. And I love it.

Some of the errors are suposed to be fixed in GT-4, don't know if they know about the curbing though...but using other cars to corner will definitly be out.
roooo
01-20-2004, 10:01 AM
What's wrong with using the curbing? People do it in real life so it's probably somewhat accurate, but very dependent on the track.
GT4 will rule all. And with a 900-degree steering wheel ... ooooh. :D
Steven Scala

In GT3, the first third-gear left hander at Trial Mountain, going under the tunnel/bridge has a kerb that you can hook your inside-front on. A fun challenge to hit it right, and probably one of the most interesting curbs in the game. Only problem is that there's not as much sidewall feedback as one would like. (Then again, I spent eight months playing this game in a cabin in the woods...)
I would like some French-style kerbing on the inside of one of Midfield's corners. I wonder if they take requests?

You can do that now with F1 2002 for the PC. Just get the ALMS addon. You can even drive the Bentley Speed 8. Yummy. 328kph down the back of LeMans...
Or you can try GT Cars, 360 Challenge, M3 Challenge, etc. With F1 Challenge you can run Aussie V8 Supercars, or ETCC.

... the Nordscheife. ;) Yeah, imagine Mosport in GT4?? At least it would be FAR better than the Mosport immitation in Sportscar GT, where i was able to do like 53 second laps... I wonder how accurate the times are to what a real car would do at Laguna, etc...
Haha, I came up with a long list of requests a while ago. I would love to submit them... (they included stages for rallying as opposed to gravel racing circuits, the karting/gymkhana/drifting circuit from GT2, have rain a sporadic feature in all races just like real life, and have more cars in each race...).

Nothing's wrong with using the kerbing, I just don't think that it should have a higher level of grip, especially to that degree. Since when did painted kerbs have more grip that the asphalt in the groove??? :D

I want to try Project Gotham 2, merely because of the car selection and the old Nurburgring.... I doubt the physics could be at the same level or above the GT series though. And what's with the name?? Sounds like we'd be racing Batmobiles or something.
RegaMaro
01-20-2004, 07:57 PM
Can't really comment on the physics as they pertain to real life. But the car selection is second to none of any other game out there as far as street autos go. Graphics are better but no modifications allowed on the cars :( Driving the cars is much like the GT series... cars handle pretty much the same. If yer looking for good physics a console is not the place to do it. Even the selection on the PC for good racing sims is scarce. Grand Prix Legends, F1 2002, F1 Challenge, Grand Prix 3 are among the select few with good reputation for their simulation.

Wow, people are actually preaching my song.
BTW, Nordscheife is available for F12002 & F1challenge & Netkar & Nascar 2003(with Transam mod), of course GPL as well
If your looking for physics then try Netkar(free), F1C, F12002, or Nascar 2003 with the Transam mod
And if anybody here has the balls to challenge me in a EA sports or Netkar........lets rock online
Seriously though, GT is great for playing with a lot of different cars. But if you want a racing sim then you need to use PC(with a wheel!!). Physics is a lot better and there are a few very good telemetry programs available to accommodate the decent setup garage. To add, I can download well over 100 tracks for these games, the only big track not really available is Mosport. I blame the crappy rendition found in GPL for this.

As for the R390LM...haven't got that yet...but of course its fast...its a Nissan :D
malcolm
01-28-2004, 05:19 PM
yeah, with the F686, you can upgrade the turbo until it's about 940 bhp or so. That sounds more like the power outputs of the turbo days before boost control... I read somewhere that the TAG-Porsche engine was using somewhere around 80 psi of boost! No wonder when those engines went, they went in style (and by style, I mean a huge bang with lots of fire... haha).
I also have the F688, but the turbo upgrade only nets me about 750 bhp (respectable in itself, but still 200 down on the F686). It's about 2 seconds slower at Laguna.

BAH you cant get simulation tires on the F1 car.
malcolm
01-28-2004, 05:38 PM
ok... what are simulation tires supposed to simulate anyway??? Road tires? R-compounds? It's definitely not slicks, as even the hardest slick would provide more grip than what the simulation tire seems to give. On an F1 car, you would never run anything harder than the equivalent to a medium compound tire, so I can't see why you'd want to run anything different.

Malcolm, if you're really suggesting that any car can do a 57-second lap at Laguna, then I believe you're blowing smoke.
My best laps at Laguna last night with the F686M (926hp):
1:00.147
1:00.177
1:00.465
I have a hard time believing there's three seconds hiding somewhere in that lap, unless you've somehow managed to straightline the Corkscrew in 4th gear and land it.
(Incidentally, I got into the R390 GT1 and did a 1:11.130 afterward. The thing suddenly felt like a pig in comparison to the F1 car. Think I'll need to tweak the setup to get down below 1:10...)

nope, no cutting corners.... next time I am home, I'll take a digital pic of the screen, and post it on here. I am pretty sure it's in the high 57's. I read on a site somewhere that someone was doing 53's or something. I find that *really* hard to believe, but I guess it has been done. The set up can improve your time a little bit. It takes a lot of time... I can't do it consistently. When I push it's either right down at a high 57, or I'm in the wall or spun out.... Win-it-or-wall-it theory. ;)
but yeah, I am home in two weeks or so, so I'll get some proof for you then (and make sure I have that right... haha). ;)

I run with Stability Assistance off, and Traction Control on either zero or one, since my real cars have neither. If I could turn off the ABS I'd do that too, since I don't have those either. :D
Cote d'Azur is the Monaco track. :)
Sorry, I've been too busy this week at work, plus I've been trying to hammer out the rules for the challenge.
So far, I figure we can use the A, B, C classing from Arcade Mode, with Race Car and Normal Car as sub-classes. Each week, there'll be a different track and there'll be a cutoff time for posting results. First week, C-class, then B-class, then A-class.
Challenge is only open to board members, as per categories on this board, i.e. Solo 1, Solo 2, etc., and no results from friends can be posted.
Competitors must also be able to prove their claims if enough people challenge them.
I'll get to it soon...unless of course the moderator shuts the whole shebang down. D'oh!

Greg, the reason I suggest using the License Test is that there is no Wall Banging, no Cutting Corners, and because it's a Spec Car it is all up to the DRIVER. Since you'll fail if you cheat, there's little argument about the times (besides lying). Try doing test S8 and you'll see it's 100% driver and not car and setup and parts.
Good that you dont use TCS! Now as for F1 @ L.S. the fastest car there is the F094s. This car set-up will easily do under a minute lap without cutting corners.
You name your challenge and I'll be ready.

Tried S8 last night. Got about three corners in before I started asking myself why the heck I'd ever drive anything so poorly geared. I mean really, I can drive junk in real life, I don't need a simulator for it.
In the short view, the 'all driver' thing is great, but it strips the well-rounded driver of a number of his advantages. I'd argue that it is to racing what shinny is to hockey. My apologies to those who don't understand setup adjustment or race tactics. I just can't justify the time spent chasing a single banzai lap. Still waiting on what you come up with tho, GregF.
Quickly moved on to trying to win the Formula GT series in the R390LM. Nice little challenge there. Picture Klaus vs. the F2000's and you can imagine what it's like.

Steve, this is a Simulator. The Toyota GT1 was one of the best and fastest engineered lemans cars in 99. It is set-up with the gearing that Toyota engineers calculated and is a handful to drive because it hasa twin turbo V8 with over 600 hp and a gargantuan amount of torque. If you do want to try S8 again try not shifting under 3rd gear. BTW you can get a Gold in that test without shifting at all ( 3rd gear)
As for using the R390, its a great car but try turning the traction control off and driving. hehehe.
Your right, there is alot of setup and racecraft that can be applied to GT3, but that doesn't tell much about your driving (playing) skill. If you really want to improve your driving, try Golding ALL the Licenses.
Dangit! I only have GT2.
Wall-banging is part of the game though!

JaYh, you don't wall bang in real life so why so you in a simulator? If you learn to drive in the game you will realize that you do not need to hit walls/cars to go fast. The vehicle dynamics and accuracy in the game are amazing and if you treat it like real life driving you'll appreciate it more.

Thanks for what I assume to be a well-meaning coaching attempt there, WillP. I know that 3rd is the only gear that isn't totally useless here. That's half my point. You wouldn't try running LeMans gearing at Monaco, so why do it in a simulator?

Ya, but you don't drive a real car with a d-pad and full on / full off accellerator and brake buttons do you? :p Hitting walls IS faster in some cases. So is "bouncing" other cars in the corner.

When I drive license S8 I do use 2nd and 1st gear. There is a great deal of car control required to use those gears but to set the times I've posted you must. If you'd like to try a well setup test try license S6, it uses a Oreca Viper at Leguna Seca. The bad thing is you must keep 2 wheels on the track at all times or else you'll fail, but isn't that what we'd want to do in real life?

The Dual Shock 2 controller has pressure sensitive buttons that have a great deal of modulation(throttle, braking and steering) when you get used to it. In GT3 when you hit a Wall your speed gets dropped considerably and you actually go slower (with a few exceptions, of course).
