Don't park into the wind with a block heater.
Use 5W30 or 0W30 synthetic.
Park indoors.
all of the above :D

Marsh is right-better do a coolant check.I've had coolant freeze in the lower rad hose so no coolant gets circulated. Not a good thing for cyl. head etc.

good point!
Maybe I WAS right about my water-pump not being up to snuff!
I've run an air-cooled mazda 323 for a winter once... SUPER warped head... so it ATE the coolant in 200 km's... After that... just kept her movin' all the time in the winter... would reach a traffic-jam... and had to find an alternate route!!! Car would get hot... more warpage!!! The cycle continued!!! :D

OR... maybe the "50/50 pre-mixed coolant" is a little diluted????
Whaddya think?
They try to make a few extra pennies per jug by diluting it??? :p

Hey... it's never been -40 in Ottawa. The coldest recorded temperature (Temperature - not the windchill garbage) is only -36.
That's not even cold enough to make your BBQ stop working! Go out west to Fort McMurray, you'll see temps under -42C, that's when you can carry around an open bucket of liquid propane. Now THAT's cold!

was the P.S. and A/C belt / tensioner...
I realized it when I lost the belt on the way home!!!
Then this morning... You ever try to turn a heavily powered steering rack.... with no power steering... when the fluid has been "chilling" (solidifying) at -36* over night!!!
OMMFG!!!
Good job I'm stong like ox.

I've also heard that in the case of a battery that is too cold, that turning on your headlights might help get the electrons flowing more easily. After a couple of minutes, turn them off and try starting again.
Hmmm...

I was skiing in Ellicottville today. Nice afternoon turned into a cold night. Buy 6:30 it was only the people that had driven over 2 hours to get there. I'm proud to say that my knee gave out before my internal furnace... But I wasn't terribly upset about it.

Since I started skiing, I rarely complain about winter weather!!! The only clouds in the sky were either over Georgian Bay, or were from the snowmaking eqpt. Cold, but heck, we're Canadian, right? Dress for it and you'll be fine. I was actually sweating, but for a couple unprotected patches on my face that are nicely bitten.
I don't fall down often, but I took a twisting spill, and one of my bindings didn't release. Friggin' OUCH! I wonder how long its going to take my knee to get better? I got plans for Quebec in a few weeks! :(
