Taken back in the 'Civic Days', it shows quite a few stalwart racers still with us today, and the back end of a class-winning Hyudai that was almost brand new at the time ... note car #95 I believe Nick Beck taking the outside line trying to get by all those HUGE Honda's in his Mini ... I remember the twin engine Tercel, it was from the Peterborough area, built by a chap who worked for Russell Toyota I believe. Once it got sorted it was very quick. The second year it was sold to Bob Donley, he & his wife raced it in rubber & he in studs (no SS in those days) and it got quite beat up and never saw it after that season.
Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas Rob, I think it ended up heading west somewhere. You'll note that I merged the first two posts in this thread from an old thread from 2004 ...;)

Perhaps one of the most interesting conversions for full out, more bang for your buck racing, was a brief appearance of Chris Martins 4WD Ford Aspire, running a 323 Drivetrain. From 2007 I believe we credit Jimmy McGlade for the pic.

Andy...blast from the past, I remember all these cars from standing on the banks for the past 26 years....haven't missed a season yet. I've got another "string" going as well...some people know about that one, but it's only 10 years running ;)
I have a photo album of my dad's which has got lots of old photos in it...might have to scan a few.
The Asfire was kinda fun...it still sits there, complete as that photo was taken. You posting that made me think for 17 seconds about some more parts i have sitting around, some e-85, and having some fun...but that was only a thought for 17 seconds. Oh...and that thing was anything but cheap... And even though i did drive it...the concept, and everything behind the scenes was my uncle's. I was just the spacer between the seat and the steering wheel, and spent about a month of time cutting, welding, grinding, and swearing at it.
I do have some other ideas though...lets just say i have WAY too many spare parts around, and something even smaller than an Aspire.

Its amazing you know,I didn't even know what I tractionized tire was when I brought the car the 1st weekend,no idea about ballast, alignments etc etc-and look at me now eh! Still know nothing about this damn black magic sport.:D

Builder was PMSC member Ralph Nelson. Car was built in part due to one of those 'No way you can make it work dares' I think it was Nick Taylor who said it couldn't be done as Nick and Ralph both worked at Russelle Toyota in Peterborough at that time. I think year was 1993. First event was at Kawartha Downs Race Track when we ran on the Horse Track. We had an announcer on the Sunday who was hilarious as he described Ice Race like a horse race ''they are neck and neck going into the turn with the red car against the rail''
Ralph was a great tire builder and he really worked to get the best out of car and tires.
Unfortunatley there were no other 4wd that year [except when Frank Sprongle came to play one weekend] so while Ralph won I think every race he didn't score much for season.
One race he ran out of gas on warm up. went off track threw in a few gallons Race had started and tail car was in the kidney [clockwise] when Ralph hit the track. He won the race.
Some great memories in those old photos Andy

Somewhere around 1998 ....

Don't know if anyone will remember this Toyota that Mike and I brought to Minden. It was a field car that never ran right and the first qualifier we entered the rad blew up so Mike and I decided you didn't need a stinkin' rad at -35C and promptly bypassed the blown rad by simply connecting the upper and lower rad hoses together with a coupler and a couple screw clamps. The upper rad hose exploded with a very loud bang shortly after the first lap of it's first race and the motor seized solid as i drove back to my pit.

Love the pictures! The good old days!
That twin engine Tercel was driven by Ralph Nelson of PMSC. Once he figured out out to drive the sucker...he blew the doors off everything!
I have 8mm & 16mm film footage (now on DVD) of some of those races on Clear Lake. I remember a season we ran on Chemong Lake. Even the old VW was topping out at 70mph on the straight.

These pictures would probably have been taken in Quebec.
Hugh Dixon drove the Police Mini (1965-1967)and Dave Greenblat drove a
mini the "Nasau Taxi" with a taxi sign stolen from the Nasau during
the Nasau Speed Week.
John Powell later drove a Mini nameed Percivil (the Penguin) as the caped crusider
in front of 50,000 spectators and nation wide television on the Planes of Abraham and was presented the trophy by princess grace of monaco.
It was also covered on the three U.S. national morning shows on Monday morning.

Thought I'd re ignite this thread....happened upon a few pics this morning...
the brown dodge charger lasted one season. The car was pretty wasted to begin with, then I found the Volvo....Ken was killing them in RWD with the Corolla, probably around 1995. It was my inspiration for finding one like it.
Took a while but I finally did. Too bad his car was getting tired and was put to pasture, I think around 1998.

with any luck, this will go on as long as the checkered flag thread.....:D
judging by the notes on the back of the pix, most of these are from 2003, so not that vintage.
the one of the corolla, in it's original yellow livery was from a towing incident on the way home. Our buddy Dan B. (yup, the same Dan that flat towed his honda in 1st gear about all the way home to Ajax one year) had suddenly pulled over to check something on his car. I was following behind and when I pulled over, the shoulder was ice, and it was either pile into the back his car, or the ditch. I chose the ditch. Good thing a front end loader guy was clearing driveways close by or else I'd have been there until spring.
In that pic of Stef, he still has the same ice racer, same street car and the trailer.....oh and the same tow bars and number board. Holly mackeral, same coat and pants....why he must be related to Bryan Rashleigh... :)
Ah those old billboards came in handy for tarps, for awhile. They lost their appeal in the cold, you could stand them up straight!

When my neighbour returned from Florida I told him about my adventures ice racing. He toddled off into his basement and returned with these photos. He remembers the race being held on a lake in the Minden area in the late 60's or early 70's. He said that he just stumbled upon the track and so can't identify any of the racers.
I recognize car 71 from earlier posts. Any idea who the others might be or where it was located? And did those plexiglass shields on the leading edge of the hood actually work? I see that the ratio of domestic to import cars hasn't changed much over the years.
(The view of the ice haze from the back of the pack is timeless and sadly familiar).
