Options are available for those looking for a "HANS" device.
Have a look at isaacdirect.com/
Their waiver alone is worth a look,

Errr... in an accident that is going to go from 100 to a dead stop when those shock absorbers bottom out as your belts stretch your body will keep going while your head stops moving. EEEEK. http://www.mco.org/forums/images/eek08.gif
I like the HANS device much better than that.

This thing attaches to the shoulder belts so they move with the stretch of your belts .The problem I see with it is the necessity of drilling holes in your helmet which may void the safety cerification of the helmet

Who said the shocks on the Isaac will "bottom out?"
FYI, the Isaac guys now offer an adhesive option for those who are wary of drilling into their helmet. It is on the order form but it is not discussed yet in detail on the site. Some helmet manufacturers warn that drilling into your helmet could void the Snell rating.
The Isaac offers better protection in an impact vs. the HANS, plus side impact protection, and you cannot alter it in any way that will interfere with its effectiveness (like you can do by adjusting the HANS to make it more "comfortable").
Very few downsides that I can see.....guys at Isaac look like they've done their homework.

The thing that I see that is a little different between this and the HANS is that the HANS has a fixed reference to the upper torso. This can slide somewhat on the shoulder belts. I suppose the the valving and oil chosen they can certainly limit the movement of the shock based on the velocity.
I should really hold judgement until I see a video of a test. what I would like to see is independant testing of all the various devices, video and seeing exactly what happens to the head in the various tests, ie, no protection, HANS, Issac, web systems, etc...
I was lucky enough to have spent 2 hours with Trevor Asline who is a safety consultant to both Nascar, Cart and IRL. Trevor along with 3 other individuals discovered the real reason for the death of Dale Earnhart. We all know the belts broke, they discovered why. Trevor works for a company called BSR www.bsrsafety.com
In the world of motorsports presently Trevor ranks in the top 3 on race car safety restraints. I learned from Trevor that it is real easy for any company to CLAIM their product works. He also expailed to me that any single safety device is only as good as the supporting safety devices it works with. A Hans device is much less effective if you have you belts mounted just a few degrees off. What good is a seat bolted to a floor if the cage moves, but the seat does not. I would reccomend looking at the BSR web site. They also offer a great video narrated by Benny Parsons that will open your eyes to what happens in a crash. I purchased their D-Cell device. I drilled my helment. It does not void warranty, or reduce structural integrity if done properly.
